XD Now it's replaced by... I think, a red screen? That's what I've heard anyway, at least in some beta testing of Windows 7.
I once had a Red Ring of Death on my Xbox 360, and it got it to work for like three more minutes... after threatening it with Captain Falcon.

XD I almost did, then in desperation, not seriously thinking it would work, I reset it and said "IF YOU DON'T WORK, I WILL FALCON PUNCH YOUR ASS." And it worked... for like three minutes, then died for good. I had to replace the whole motherboard.

I know what you mean. Though, by the time I really got into the computer scene (in terms of knowledge of hardware and software anyway) that time was ending...
Though, I can testify to how hardy Nintendo hardware in particular was. When I first got my SNES, it was at the apartment's dumpster, several years ago. I saw the big box and thought "Eh, no one would throw one away." But something told me to go look, and I did... there was a SNES inside, with the cords and everything, missing only a game. So I picked one up at the local pawn shop, and to my surprise the bloody thing worked perfectly, despite the casing being cracked, with a gaping hole in the front, where the parts inside could easily have been damaged.

Indeed. I fixed it all up too, that was one of my earlier computer projects, replacing the casing on it.

I once transplanted the guts of an NES into a custom case so it would be easier to load games.
