Description

This is my version of a flag for Cascadia, the region I live in. If you'd like to learn more about  the Cascadian Independence Movement, click this link:

The reason I made this is because, though I do like the basic idea, I have several major quarrels with the most popular version used currently. First off, it's just a poorly designed flag. The dimensions seem random and odd. I prefer 2:1 flags, so that's what I went with here. I do understand the use of other dimensions that fit in with specific designs or uses, but here I'm going with my favorite and one of the most simple and easiest to remember. Secondly, the Douglas Fir is not a good symbol to represent all of the Cascadian region. The damn things rarely grow around my region. Also, the placement and design of the Douglas is... Odd to say the least. To replace the Douglas, I've used seven black, eight-pointed stars to represent the seven states I assume would be instituted (although the number may change based on the actual divisions). The states represented on this flag are: Jefferson, Oregon, Washington, Columbia, Alaska, Idaho, and Montana.

I had a similar set of nits to pick with the Doug flag as currently popularized, although I came to a somewhat different conclusion.

After experimenting with every possible size, I settled with the Golden Ratio (or 5x8 like Sweden if you want to make it easier.) I also agree about having to get more particular about the colour. It's not uncommon for new flags to not have a set shade for their colours. Germany took a while to decide it "gold" meant Vegas Gold or Sunflower Yellow. So I likewise tried to nail down the shades of blue & green used, because just any old shade won't do.

I made a blog entry about it, complete with pictures and diagrams of my methodology!

Thanks. It's not exactly an original idea, but I like the colors used here more than the colors on the Doug Flag.
