The main character's name isn't really Sherlock Holmes in this, it's Reginald Kincaid. "Sherlock Holmes" is just a role Kincaid--an actor, by the way--plays, created by Watson to make things more interesting for the general public--because who would want to read about a mystery-solving physician?
Other "reimaginings" of Sherlock Holmes (other than Sherlock and the films with Robert Downey, Jr. in the title role) you might want to check out:
The Seven Per-Cent Solution--in which Watson, fed up by Holmes' cocaine addiction, presses Holmes to go to Vienna so that Sigmund Freud can help get rid of it (the cocaine addiction, not Vienna).
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes--in which a more fallible Holmes (spoiler alert) tries to solve a mystery, but inadvertently uncovers a plot by the German Kaiser (I think) to steal an experimental submarine.
There's more, but these are two of the more well-known.
