I wonder if other countries have little toll plazas.....Someone(s) told me that there's gaurds and border patrol up the wazzo at this place now....

On the border between the former DDR and BDR (east and west Germany) there were and they were similar to this, now there are none whatsoever (you can drive from the North cape to Gibraltar and not be checked at any border)
