Description Oh my gosh I actually finished something mildly legitimate.
:/
Its a miracle.

-------------------

; v; Anyways...yeah! This was tons and tons of fun to work on!
You see, I'm making characters to turn into future ABJDs (Asian ball jointed dolls) and this is one of them. He's going to be a YoSD size Dream of Doll Pisce, who has this sort of "sleepy" face". I thinks its sooo beautiful and wanted to make a character that revolved around that sort of "sleepy" aspect in the sculpt. So yeah! And thus Rem was created!
xD Lol at the name, I know. But with that cute sleepy face what else could I have named him? haha!
Anyways....my idea for him is that he is a "dream thief", and steals other peoples dreams and uses them as a sort of "energy" for himself. Unfortunately though, he can't ever actually fall asleep himself for certain "reasons" (secrets!). Just because he can't allow himself to fall asleep, doesn't mean that he can't fall asleep. But if he did it would...be bad. So because he never sleeps he has a constant tired expression. xD He actually carries around an alarm clock with him wherever he goes to make sure he doesn't fall asleep, but I forgot to draw it xD
In my little story for him though, unlike others who use dreams as "energy", Rem does not steal bad or good dreams or turn them the reverse like others are known to do. Rem just steals them in their entirety, making people unable to dream at all. In the story, people refer to this as stealing someones "dream soul", like a reaper takes a human soul. Hence his title as "Dreamreaper". Oh, and the way he dresses has importance in the "story" but I'm not going to get into that because I've already blabbed enough about him!

So yeah, anyways, about this picture.
xD I actually only started drawing this yesterday, but I finished it already. I've been having a terrible time finishing things lately, so I wanted to work on something..."random". What I mean is, the only part of this that is outlined is Rem, while the rest is spontaneous. I realized that linearting a crapton of details intimidates me from coloring them, so I decided to do something like this for a change of pace to see how it goes. And I love it! ewe Oh my gosh it is so much fun to draw spontaneous, airy things! I want to do this again!
Oh, and I also used chalk pastel for a big majority of this. Now normally I don't like using them, but in this case it was really really fun! Pastels are great for airy effects. Plus I discovered that you can use a plastic eraser to make shapes in the pastel! Like the stars at the bottom. And you can also drag the eraser to make "rays". ^^ Its fun using different media, even if I am not very fond of it.
xD Oh and the rest is Prismacolor Standard/Verithin colored pencils, like always haha~

.....; v; I actually kind of love this.
I don't usually like my own art but....I don't know, I really like this. I think honestly, it reminds me of everything I like about drawing. Designing characters/ outfits, symbolism, light effects, pastels colors....I could go on.
^^ Anyways, I enjoy this very much
I hope you guys like it too~
; w;

Sorry for not posting anything legitimate in a while. I hope this makes up for it~

^^ But yeah, I love coloring with pencils, and I'm just starting to love pastels too, even though they are by far the most difficult thing i've ever had to draw with.

o vo How are you doing by the way? I haven't been on gaia in foreverrrr so I don't know~
I did a freebie thread not to long ago though, but I totally forgot to tell you about it OTL

You know, my personal big problem with drawing is my heavy marker technique in comparison to backgrounds. I still haven't found a myself a technique to draw backgrounds in a way that would flatter my markers.
But you! This is perfect! The lining is delicate and thin but it works amazingly in your style

I just love the pastel cloud. It's so amazingly drawn! It's really great how it has a pinker tone on the left and purpler tone on the right XD
Rem's hat is super cute, too, and I like the way you've drawn the lantern-like part of his staff

Congratulations on finishing something you're proud of I sure know how you feel about outlining and coloring details It takes time and one has to be careful and patient or all of it will be ruined. But I'm sure you'll one day wake up and that's all you want to do XD

BlueRoseArkelle In reply to Hixateez [2012-03-10 03:51:28 +0000 UTC]

>u< Aww thank you!

^^ Yeah, it is difficult to find a linearting technique that transitions well with foregrounds and backgrounds. One day I just got frustrated with always linearting in black and how dark it is in comparison to my coloring, and decided I would try a bunch of different liner colors to see if I liked those better. ^^ And it worked! I also took the time to research about line weight and how it affects art.
But yeah...a suggestion I have for you though is when you lineart backgrounds, try making the lines thinner as they move back in perspective. That change in line strength makes a huge difference! Plus, it helps to fade things in backgrounds away to give more depth. It took me forever to finally understand line weight, but its essential!

> u< Anyways...thank you again! *o* I loooove drawing clouds <3

xD Haha! Yes, that is definitely a good point! I wish I was more patient when it comes to coloring though...I have patience for drawing/linarting details, but when it comes to coloring them...ugh
OTL

Yeah, I guess I should work harder. I'm just so stupid that I don't understand the simplest of things even if someone rubbed them in my face. And I don't feel comfortable cutting the lines... You know, it looks really great when you do it, for instance, but I just don't like to cut the "outmost" lines of the characters/objects I draw :/ It feels odd...

And no worries, you're not the only one who lacks patience I don't even have it enough to lineart properly.

BlueRoseArkelle In reply to Hixateez [2012-03-13 06:22:45 +0000 UTC]

; o; Ahh you are not stupid. I totally understand what you mean about that though. I think most of the time even if we are aware of problems or ways to fix them we can be oblivious to them out of stubbornness or vanity, but I think mainly out of fear. Something that sounds as simple as changing a line can be really hard because were afraid of change or of possible failure. So I understand completely, and of course it is always fine to stick with what you know and make it work for you.
Me personally, I struggle with using dark colors. Even though I know using them will help add depth, its still hard for me to do despite that. But lately i've been trying to embrace that aspect of my drawing a bit more because I realize that though I should branch out, I should also embrace what I like and am comfortable with.
^^ So I guess what I am saying is that if you are comfortable with making lines in a certain way, you should embrace it and develop in in ways that appeal to you.
xD If I am making any sense.

xD Haha~ We should both try to be more patient shouldn't we?
I think I should do one of those "draw something and don't say your finished untill ___ hours" drawing exercises. xD

Hixateez In reply to BlueRoseArkelle [2012-03-13 07:34:58 +0000 UTC]

You are making sense! I just wish I could get over my trouble with lining... I don't really even like the way I outline but tragically, my biggest problem is lack of equipment. I love a certain marker brand, but they only make 0.05 points at smallest, and you can't buy those separately; only in a set of 6 markers of different points. That's fine, too, but... they're rather expensive and I have little use for the thickest markers :/
On the other hand, I haven't had the courage to use a 0.05 marker. I... should.

XD

; n; Ahh, I see. Yes, not having the right tools can be hindering for sure. True story, before I got my Copic liners, I was using a fountain pen for lineart. xD Its was the worst and messiest thing ever. So I know what you mean about not having the right tools.
ene Yeah I know, Copic does the same thing. They make sets of liners together and that is the only place you can get a disposable 0.03 liner. They don't sell them individually as disposables. Luckily I got myself a non-disposable 0.3 sepia pen and I bough 0.03 sized nibs separately to replace in it. Before that I had the same problem where I had to buy the pack and the bigger pens get unused. xD I still have almost an entire set of black liners that I don't use haha~

owo But yess you should use the 0.05! I used that size for a long time and it is really nice! If anything, it is really great for the details on faces, like lips and noses.

Hopefully my dad will be able to help me with that. I use Sakura Pigma Micron markers and apparently they're being sold separately and even in different colors in some net markets, but I need my dad to do some research on what site would be a reliable and not-too-expensive one.
Replaceable caps? That sounds cool. I didn't even know those are made for markers.

Yeah, I think I will. I'll try it out with my next picture
