Description MY LITTLE PONY: REVIEWING IS MAGIC

(DISCLAIMER: I go WAY too off-topic at the very beginning of this review. If you wish to skip to the actual review, go to the sixth paragraph of this review.)

Dear Princess Celestia,...

What I learned this week was... that's not how you start a professional review! Excusez-moi...

Okey doeky lokey, now onto the review, allow me to start by saying that THIS is the most adorable, sugar-coated, colorful cartoon I have seen in a long time. And I love every. Single. Frame of it. Why? WHY? Well, lemme give you a little story.

Sometime, around January 2011, I logged into DA only to notice that it was SPAMMED with fanart upon fanart of these fillies (and colts); fanart, plz accounts, avatars, journals- they were EVERYWHERE!. There was no getting away from it. At first pondered... "Where'd they come from?" And then, I went, "From THIS show?" YouTube was also ridden with two-second-long videos of lines- LINES- from the scenes, from the episodes themselves. It was crazy! I wondered "How could a show like this be so popular?". And so, I watched the two-parter opener for the show sometime around June of Summer 2011 and right after that, my life was over.

It was mind-boggling, not only were the first two episodes bearable, but they were actually pretty good. If I were to make a review of this, I could not make a review with just two episodes, so I decided to watch more episodes and somewhere in between The Ticket Master and Winter Wrap Up, I-I was hooked! It was as if, there may have been a subliminal message somewhere that hypnotized me into watching the rest of the show; NO, it wasn't that. It was clever writing, funny jokes, and- to my surprise- the hand of one of my all-time favorite animators, Lauren Faust.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention during the credits or the theme song and missed her name. For those of you that don't know, Lauren Faust is an animator; previous projects of hers include The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, two shows which I am also very fond of. She's had a bit of an influence on these cartoons by making them surprise hits; maybe not so much for Foster's, but PPF drew in doubts from its premise, protagonists and just its cuteness. We were proved wrong about what could have been a generic, girly cartoon if handled by the wrong person, but she turned it into something memorable by making a show with humor and characters that could appeal to all sorts of demographics. She succeeded with both of those shows, and now... she's 3 for 3!

I feel like I may have detracted you guys from the main point of this, but this is something I just had to get out of the way. Before I distract myself once again I'll just go straight to the point , after watching every single episode from Season 1 (the sole exception being Dragonshy) I felt prepared and ready to vent my feelings about this particular cartoon. And here you go:

For those who don't know (if you live deep enough under a rock that it's IMPOSSIBLE for you to have never heard of the toy line) My Little Pony is a Hasbro line of toys that are based on... well, ponies. Hasbro had the brilliant idea of creating a new show based on the toy line. What I mean by "new" is that, there have already been shows and specials based on the toy line, albeit not quite as memorable. Back then, they felt more like commercials than a true cartoon show- they weren't horrible, but they didn't have anything that made them special. Being the reboot that it is, people thought it would be even more advertising. Thankfully, this was very well averted by well-written characters and a self-aware sense of humor that feels like something out of an Edgar Wright movie. The main characters- or "Mane Six" as some people like to call them- have a sympathetic value that makes us, the viewers, care and relate to them. Even for those who I feared were gonna be the stereotypical type of characters that you'd find in this sort of show, like Rarity, are very likeable.

As I've mentioned the series' humor is mainly fulled by self-referential or "Meta" humor, in the same vein of things like Scream, Shaun of the Dead, etc. Character traits, events, happenings will usually get acknowledged in some way or another by the characters much faster than you can say "Appleoosa". The voice acting really adds a little something extra to very otherwise common or mundane lines that I just can't quite describe (Although, it might explain the existence of the 2-second long videos I mentioned a while back). Visual or background gags *cough*Derpy Hooves*cough* also give this show a little bit of a Looney Tune-like vibe on the jokes that meander into slapstick territory. That brings up my next point, references flood the cartoon so much that it'll make your head spin- to the point where I couldn't name half of the stuff they were referring to! Seems as though they took a page from Scott Pilgrim and went with it. That's not to say that most of the references are to anything child-friendly, the Big Lebowski reference in The Cutie Pox is just the tip of the iceberg- there's plenty more where that came from.

That brings me to my next point, the animation. I have to say, for Flash-powered animation, the bright colors and fluid movements are pretty easy on the eyes, not to mention there's always something on-screen whether in the foreground and background, but it's not too overbearing that it'll distract from the focus and for Flash, that's impressive. I feel like I'm having a Total Drama moment in which the animation looks like it's made by Flash, but it's NOT Flash; I don't know if that's true or not, but... I'm departing from the topic again, aren't I? No distractions!

Then we have the characters, every good series needs some memorable characters, and these are surely going to meet the quota for that. As I've said even for the stereotypical "girly" characters, they are given endearing qualities that makes them really stand out as, well, friendly, as I already brought up with Rarity as an example (She's my favorite pony too, BTW). Better still are the one-episode and background characters who seem to leave a lasting impression, even if they don't do much- *cough*Derpy Hooves again!*cough*.

Another thing that's worth mentioning are the morals for each episode and the way they are taught. They come in as natural instead of being phoned in because the characters do fix their flaws and learn from their mistakes, unlike other cartoons which have their message tacked on at the end without leaving any real impact or deeper meaning whatsoever - *cough*Family Guy*cough*. For a true-to-God kids' show, that's really quite an accomplishment. And yes, some of these lessons are pretty cliche- it's bad to lie and keep secrets from your friends, it's important to keep your connections with your family, any problem is a problem no matter how small- you get the idea. But as I said, the characters are caring and willing enough to help a friend no matter what the issue and it come off as natural; I do feel the magic of friendship and therefore friendship is magic! It all makes sense now!*brick'd*

In short, this cartoon has all the cuteness and fluffiness of a pre-schooler's cartoon show mixed in with well-written jokes and engaging characters that are sure to make anyone who watches this show fall in love with it. Just look at where that got me.

Final Mark of Approval:
A+

Dear Princess Celestia,

I learned that review something does not just mean looking and it and studying it just to take it apart and see what's wrong with it. It also means looking at them from a positive perspective and looking at what it does right that gives it that special charm that makes it so... special. Reviewing can be hard to do, but with the right motivation and tools, it can be a pretty fun and enjoyable experience, just as it is right now.

You Faithful Student,
Blu3Danny

Thank you for reading.

That's what I give shows that have really shown true effort and a cast of likable and relateable characters- I don't think I can sing its praises high enough like the rest of the Brony community, but I'm glad I could join the herd.

... oh, Celestia, what has this show done to me?

The show is at its fourth season. Maybe you can do a follow-up of it saying how much the show has changed. Personally there were a lot of good moments, no, great moments like talented people in the show such as John De Lancie and Weird Al Yankovic.

This is a good show, the main characters are all awesome, I only have two problems with it.

1. The stories are a little mixed to me. Most of the stories are good but there's a few that drag on a bit for me.

2. The villains are really weak in my opinion. I mean I will admit, the designs on them are creative but they don't even act like villains to me, they just act like bullies. It's just that with such great character leads like the Mane Six, Spike and the Crusaders, why couldn't they do the same with the villains? I mean if they want to make them evil, make them insane, wicked, diabolical, make them like Jafar, Scar or Ursula or some other Disney Villains!

But what do you think of the villains?

BluMoonToons In reply to yodajax10 [2013-09-30 16:15:28 +0000 UTC]

I do really love this show. The main characters are great- subtly-layered, totally defiant of their stereotypes, really likable and very relatable, too.

1. I honestly don't mind the length of the stories, as long as they build up to something; and for the most part they do- I've yet to find an episode that is NOTHING but filler.

2. Oh, I LOVE the villains; mainly for one reason- they REALLY take their time to show you the consequences of what will happen should the villains win- that's something that this show does leaps and bounds better than the previous generations of MLP; or a lot of other shows fail to do- they fail to pay attention to the balance of a hero/villain conflict- the villain must be somebody you LOVE to hate- they can be a great villain, and you don't want to see them die... but you don't want them to win. The hero must be likable enough for you to care about their fate and whether or not you want then to succeed. I disagree- I think this show has great villains and antagonists all throughout.

As to WHY they might seem weak- I don't think it's them being weak, so much as their villainous elements being downplayed. Perfect example: Discord. He's INCREDIBLY goofy and hilarious... but what he does is pretty screwed up; and I like that type of subtlety- it makes the villains smarter and more clever, therefore more threatening and even terrifying.

You may not necessarily agree with me on that- and that's totally fine. These are my two cents as to why I think the villains are actually very strong.

Shadestar24 [2013-04-22 04:02:13 +0000 UTC]

Yet another reason why I love this cartoon.

Not only is it a reboot of one of my favorite toy lines from when I was younger(I automatically recognized Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash), BUT I've come to notice that it's become more developed and well-written and thought out.

I also love Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and The Powerpuff Girls.

Another thing is the Elements of Harmony system. If you think about it, the part-two series opener is kind of a creative way to start teaching young kids about the magic of friendship.

And one more thing; Have you watched the other two seasons recently? I only want to know this because of the Season 2 opener, with both parts being my favorite MLP episodes in GENERAL.

BluMoonToons In reply to Shadestar24 [2013-04-23 22:49:36 +0000 UTC]

That's what caught me the most off-guard. At first I thought it was just "not bad", until I began to analyze it and see it is a LOT better-written than I would've imagined.

Ditto; I love both of those shows as well.

Yeah. The thing is that this show DOES like to teach lessons, but it does it in a way that it is actually well-integrated with the story; which is what I find really cool about it.

Yes! I've watched the second season all the way through... I have NOT watched the third one, yet. Although, I've heard rather... mixed things about the third season.

Looking back on the previous generations of MLP, Hasbro's actually outdone themselves with MLP this time.

Niice! My favorite character from Powerpuff Girls would probably be Blossom, Bubbles, AND Buttercup because I can't choose between one of those girls.

Even the Elements of Harmony system in the show is amazing. Hell, the entire series will one of these days lead to a good-natured generation of people because of what the Mane Six(What Fluttershy, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack are called together) teach them....I only hope the messages this show is trying to give to it's fans gets through them, under the circumstances of the rabid Bronies. o__o

Ah. IF you have Netflix, then try going on that and looking for MLP's third season and try watching it. It really brings back characters like Discord(My favorite character of this entire show), Trixie, and Princess Luna, the latter pony being the who became Nightmare Moon in the first place. If not, try going on YouTube, I guess.

And I'm pretty sure the mixed things are the reactions of the fans...You don't wanna know until you've seen the third season, trust me.

BluMoonToons In reply to Shadestar24 [2013-04-23 23:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh, totally. Although, I think Lauren Faust's involvement is what really sealed the deal.

Huh... I can't choose either. XD I do love the three. (Although my favorite would have to be Professor Utonium; he's such a dork XD).

Well, I can tell you this much; it's FAR more successful at getting its messages across, without hammering them into the audience's skulls, than many other shows have tried (and failed). Sadly, not even the Bronies (at least not ALL of them) seem to get the message. x/

Ooh! Not a bad idea at all. I should give it a shot to see what I've been missing.

Geez, I don't even know if you mean that as a good thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shadestar24 In reply to BluMoonToons [2013-04-23 23:55:20 +0000 UTC]

Ah. xD Funny thing is that at first I didn't even KNOW about Craig being her husband at first...

I know xD But he IS the genius who created the Girls in the show; yet he mentioned in Telephonies--The one where the Gangreen Gang make all the crank calls--that he never won anything in his life. When you think about that line, it's like he wasn't really popular as a kid, which is kinda depressing.

Ohhh yes. One of the reasons WHY I decided to watch MLP: FiM is not only due to the fact that it has a unique storyline, but ALSO because I'm a sucker for it's previous generations. xD And most of the Bronies, my friend, is the exact reason why I'll be needing a bag of popcorn when it comes to haters of this show, and the rabid Bronies.

Exactly! And just WAIT until you see the Trixie episode of this season...Not saying anything more for now so I don't give away spoilers on accident.

Not necessarily, because SOME Bronies don't even know what they've got and what Hasbro's trying to do for them. T_T

This is the same reason why I love MLP:FiM. I agree on everything about humor, writing, art, personalities, morals, and plot line. My first episode was "Bird in a Hoof". I was hooked just by first glance. It's similar to how I got hooked on Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Wizards of Waverly Place, and Sailor Moon.

The Aquabats Super Show. Let me count in a word, a show that basically has a band (Yes and ACTUAL real band) fighting against Space Ghost, Power Ranger like monsters and actually singing in the show. The Aquabats, let me tell you, was also created by the Yo Gabba Gabba creator, Christian Jacobs, who you can tell did both shows as Plex the robot in YGG and the MC Bat Commander.

Here's a taste of what their music was like:
[link]

Now here's their current music:[link]

In my eyes like MLP, the show reminds me of the Batman 60s show with a twist of Power Rangers combined with the goofiness and awesomeness of what you wouldn't see from Josie and the Pussycats, The Beatles Cartoon Show, and everything that has the actual band members being in a show.

Also, here's something funny, you might think that the guys that produce the music wouldn't actually be in the show? Well here's the surprise, they actually are. All of the current band members are in it too. So yeah here's a preview of the show with the intro and all: [link]

Ok, so yeah nuff said.
