I had no problem living in the apartment above the ballet studio, as the music coming from downstairs normally didn’t bother me. One morning, however, it was different; the music started earlier than usual, waking me up with a loud piano melody. As I was walking downstairs to ask Phoebe to turn it down a little, I realized the piano was playing the same few notes over and over, slowing down as I got closer. My mind followed the pleasing melody, and my thinking slowed down along with the music. I entered the ballet studio, and noticed the voices, softly whispering over the piano music, but my thoughts were too blurred to make out what they were saying.
“Don’t worry, you don’t have to think about it,” said Phoebe, joyfully playing the slow melody on the piano, “just let your mind ease up; it will all make sense when you listen, and give in.”
I tried to remember why I came here, but my inner thoughts already heard what the whispering voices were saying. Without having to think about it, I undressed in the dressing room, where an outfit was ready for me. I put on the pink tights and the black leotard, as well as the black shrug, the matching shorts and the pink leg warmers to warm up in. The piano music and the voices suddenly stopped while I was putting on my makeup, but I had already accepted who I was, and walked into the ballet studio, ready to dance.
“You look cute!” Phoebe said “You’re gonna grow your hair out and put in a bun like a real ballerina?”
“Of course!” I excitedly said in a soft, feminine voice as I started warming up. I felt pain as I was stretching, but I wanted to be a true ballerina, my brain told me, so I had to become a flexible girl.
Later, after I had learned the basics of ballet, grown my hair out and put in in a neat bun, the other girls happily got to know the new, cute student in their class. Phoebe watched proudly as I put on my pointe shoes with her other students, completing her plan of turning me into a perfect ballerina.
