Description Yesterday I was surprised by a mother caracara who was accompanied by two well-grown puppies on a walk in search of food.
In the main photo appear the two young bird and the triad in photo below.

very very beautiful capture....
what distinguishes the teen from the grown up...??
Is it the ruffle of white feathers at the neck??

Excellent work

Thank you so much!

From what I have been able to research, the young caracara differs from the adult by the chest without the pattern of stripes and the white of the chest and head.
The feathers have an appearance that they did not form completely, as if the pups were being replaced by the adult feathers, including the definition of coloration.
Where I found them, I also noticed that the two followed the bird that seemed to be a mother, but they
seemed awkward when trying to fly.
One of them could not fly while I observed.  When I approached he run and rehearse a flight but did not complete.

appreciate the info very much....

We do not have such a splendid Caracara like you do,
but in watching my own animals, it does take them
awhile to get their wings as we call it....many times they
flutter and flap to no avail, and will fall out of the tree.

Baby Bunnies will try to mimic the mother and run, and all they do is
hop up and down in one spot...It takes them some time to get the forward
motion down...

It is very entertaining and useful information for a backyard animal
watcher when trying to determine the age of an animal or bird...

Thank you so much

My pleasure.
Your question has helped me find objective answers to differentiate the juvenile phase of adulthood of this beautiful bird.

I know I ask many questions sometimes,
but I have a fascination with Birds and
Animals and the best person to ask is the
photographer himself.

I am always very happy with how many
photographers love their subjects very much
and are willing to share info on their own
studies...

You do not ask many questions. Your questions are always pertinent.

Teenager, bird or humans, is the time that the your think you are adults but at the slightest sign of trouble you cry by Mom.
