I’m really glad this made it into Starcraft 2! We’d initially planned for only 1 type of Hybrid in the storyline, but we had this badass concept Samwise did of a more Zerg influenced Hybrid that was too good to pass up! Although for a year or so, his concept for this monster was pinned to his “Wall of the Dead”, a place where all the discarded and scrapped concepts can still be viewed. When we started moving forward with Hybrid designs, the Hybrid-Destroyer seemed to be leaning more towards Protoss design elements. The suggestion to make a Zerg Hybrid was carried aloft on the wings of a dove to the powers that be, and the Zerg-Hybrid concept was resurrected! In the actual game, he has tentacles coming out of his back.

This is pretty awesome. I did love the hybrids, probably the best part of the game. The second best part were the primal zerg. So awesome.

I also wish I could view the Wall of the Dead. I find myself looking at concept art of old games I play. It's a fun pastime.
Since I'm an amateur modeler, I tend to try and bring old concepts that were scrapped to life. It's an interesting hobby.

I then use the models for mods of games.

The wall of the dead is very humbling, many good ideas that might be mothballed for many years until we make another opportunity to use them!

Quite the Ultralisk, where the Destroyer is quite the High Templar.
Mixing both may create Amon, or another neutral character (an incomplete Xel'naga, with several 'cerebrates', or 'guardians')?

To be honest, I always liked how this had a very "Kaiju" (tall, but humanoid monster) feel to it. Heck, look at some of the monster designs from Pacific Rim. Same type of coloring (dark organic colors with blue lights), even.

I'm curious though, what did the other, scrapped Hybrid designs tend more towards visually?

The scrapped designs were very aquatic and graceful, intending to get an alien look that was more advanced than the Protoss and Zerg.

Hundreds actually. The stronger ones get released, but the weaker offerings are usually stored and forgotten. Occasionally we scavenge ideas back out though!

The hybrids are fittingly scary, my hat goes off to Blizzard. Maar is especially frighting as he blinks around your units. I must admit, I didn't get the point of these guys until I read the description above. Good work.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment. I wish Blizzard could open up to the public with the abundance of Hybrid concepts we created. It was a struggle, a very tall order to deliver on. I think we reached the tip of that goal, but I wouldn't be surprised if Legacy of the Void presents a new opportunity to expand these designs one more time.

Wishing the same, was just about to ask if there were any more concepts for Hybrids, apart from the two in HotS and Wings...have been brainstorming some of my own ideas as well, because the Hybrid story of SC has always been close to my heart, since the first time Zeratul met Duran on the Dark Moon! Great model and concept by the way...

I'm betting on that and I'm not a betting man I've enjoyed the Terran campaign, I loved the Zerg one...but my favorite race is Protoss - so I'm really, really looking forward to all the goodies in LotV!

seeing all those hybrid & infested units i noticed something, there isn't a protoss/terran mix in the games (yeah i know about the gestalt zero but he wasnt in the games, i wanted to see it in starcraft 2: WoL )

Story is focusing on the Protoss/Zerg hybrids mainly, there aren't any plans go to deep into Protoss/Terran tech.

If I may ask, which modeling product do you use at Blizzard? I've been thinking of going into either game design or 3d animation as a career choice, and I've always wondered what programs big development companies use and how they are different than the ones that are out there for the public.

The Starcraft 2 and WoW team use 3dsMax, while the Diablo 3 team uses Maya!

Ooooh, the expensive ones...I recently aquired Zbrush from a friend, but I don't think I'd ever get enough money to buy the kind of stuff the SCII team works with

I need to...I really suck I was watching the tutorials and tried to work with it, but those just aren't very good...I think I might just have to work with it like I did Photoshop and discover things on my own.

Sorry, what do you mean "FINAL textures"? Are textures made by different people (someone makes scrap texture and another makes final texture)? Do your modellers make textures as well or just models?

We have a texture artist who finalizes most of the showcased artwork for a consistant look. The modelers usually provide a texture as a starting point, which could be complete or simply a rough draft, it varies.
