Description Starcraft 2: Zerg 5-11-07
Modeled and Textured by Phill Gonzales, Robb Shoberg, Ted Park!, Samwise Didier

This screenshot was taken 8 days before Starcraft 2 was announced and serves as an interesting time capsule showing the state of the Zerg Race at that time.

The Brutalisk had already gone through 10 iterations, but still clung to a spot in the multiplayer army.
The Ultralisk is somewhat showing his horn-tentacles in his head, they were used to impale small units, feed the Ultralisk and regenerate his health. The horns were removed due to balance issues.
The Corruptor was a ground unit at this time.
The Swarm Host was a fatter blob-like monster, it actually was intended to burrow into a building, exposing the upper shell and acting like a spine crawler.

Those look so much better.
Pretty big hydralisks, do they have better stats?

As cool as the Corruptor looks on the ground, it was a good decision to make it an air unit...

Also thanks for this image. The FULL rooster for Zerg at this time was never actually talked about. Didn't even know the Brutalisk was an actual unit.

EDIT: Also if you can find it or if you're allowed to, could you post a more close up version of this Corruptor?

Don't have any close up versions to share, that file is old and lost to us now.

I guess the concept art for the ground Corruptor will be good enough. I intend to try and remake this ground-based Corruptor. (Eventually xD)

Mind if I ask how the brutalisk worked, given how small it was compared to its WoL counterpart?

Oh, see it was already answered. Still, loving this early look at the zerg.

Ground corruptors! hahaha, so great. That fatty infestor is hilarious though, and you're right, I'm sad he didn't sneak his way in somewhere...

Loving to get such a look at the in-development state of the game Never thought I would ever see the old ground version of the corruptor.

This is the only screenshot I have of that ground-version Corruptor, so this is a super-precious screenshot!

Our precious!

So, thanks for a lot for sharing this.
I kinda wonder what role was imagined for the brutalisk at that stage. Was it anything like the Left2Die map incarnation with wall-climbing?

Boarguts In reply to handclaw [2013-03-03 17:05:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm really scratching my head to remember all the roles.

At one point it had a more snake-like body and would swim through the ground like dolphin (i'm not kidding) bobbing up and down, I don't recall what attack it had then.

Later it used a mechanic where it would increase attack speed and damage output relative to how much damage it received.

The Left 2 Die map version was specifically made for that scenario, which is funny that we finally figured out what to have the Brutalisk do after we ship the game (aside from being a campaign target).

Can imagine how that could have been a bit of overlap with the hydralisk. Though, of course depending on how exactly it looked like. ^^

I may be blind but which one's the Brutalisk? I think I've got the rest figured out.

As always, interesting to see into the dev process

The early Hydralisks and Roaches actually looked pretty damn awesome, if you ask me. ^^

The Corruptors look strange. Is that an infested Protoss\Terran at the front of them or something? I can't make it out, but there's a strange orange shape in there.

And of course, Fatty, still seen in many, many custom games in Starcraft II. ^^

Boarguts In reply to alesha678 [2013-03-03 16:28:02 +0000 UTC]

The Roach changed very little from this screenshot, but I preferred the brown shells as opposed to the black shell we shipped the game with.

The Hydralisk was redone once the cinematic team revealed their movie-quality version, so we tried to match their look.

The Corruptor was just a mess of tentacles, The art is extremely placeholder in this screenshot.

I'm glad the fatty gets used in custom games! I'm surprised we failed to get it into the WOL campaign! It was supposed to be used on the Hellion/Zombie mission.
