What does a person do when they can't draw for shit but want to do art of their own characters? Abuse the hell out of Photoshop CS2 of course!

So the first of what will hopefully be five 'character' based collages of the sumo ranger team, we have the Red Sumo ranger herself Ashley Rodwell.

An African American young woman around her mid 20s, Ashley tastes and hobbies are very vintage/retro, being an old soul at heart (continue to call her a hipster over and over though at your own peril).

Her first love is the sport of sumo, having been a practitioner of it as a hardworking amateur since middle school and all the way throughout college. During her sumo club years, Ashley acted as the teams captain and coordinator.

Some of her duties as captain, in addition to her own training, included: Making sure her fellow club members showed up to practice on time, getting ready for tournaments, and making sure everyone went through sumo practice properly.

While giving her good leadership experience, it also made the young Ashley a somewhat of a stick in the mud for members that did not share her passion for sumo. By the time she reached young adulthood, however, most of her ‘controlling’ aspects died down after collage.

Despite her maturation over the years, occasionally Ashley’s more controlling, serious can come surging back either under stress from a random monster, or a particular crushing defeat.

Her sumo style consists of a slightly bent running pose, to better keep her body’s center of gravity low, and an even blend of palm strikes, arm throws, and mawashi based twists and grabs. When in battle as the Red Sumo Ranger, Ashley adapts her sumo to a more looser, fluid stances with more punches and upper leg kicks thrown in for good measure

Her second love is Golden Age era jazz, seeing it (and having the opinion that black culture has gone down hill musically since the 1950s to maybe the 60s if feeling generous) as the pinnacle of musical genres. Despite her love for the genre, Ashley herself has an almost nonexistent sense of musical rhythm or talent, be it singing or instrument based.

Ashley comes from a very large sized well off family consisting of doctors (both medical and mental), local politicians, business people, and lawyers (both of Ashley parents run their own firm on the border between the state of New Sopia and California.), Ashley grew up in a well off lifestyle. Prep schools, summer yachting trips off the West Coast, ect. The sort of lifestyle where kindergarten snack time had caviar on the menu.

While not ‘spoiled’ per say or without a sense of empathy, Ashley has a strong indifference to the ‘gansta’ aspects of urban black culture. From the general culture itself, the music, lifestyle, ect. Ashley justifies her views as not ‘An outright hatred, just a strong aversion.’

When not wearing her magical mawashi that can transform her into the Red Sumo Ranger with the phrase “Sumo Power Expand.” Ashley prefers conservative skirts and dresses of some shade of crimson when out in public, with a matching conservative blouse. Of the three female sumo rangers, Ashley is the one most in touch with her feminine side, being fond of high heels and red lipstick when wearing her civilian clothes.

Ashley can best be compared to in a general sense to the 2012 cartoon version of Leonardo from TMNT. Current day Ashley is less of a stick in the mud leader (compared to her younger self) and more of a leader that, while serious, is still capable of easing up and having fun from time to time.

As the Red Ranger, while a competent leader, Ashe is not the type to consciously take on the entire load of battle all by herself. The few instances in battle where she does usually is a result more a matter of habit from her amateur sumo days (since sumo is a one to one sport by nature) then from any sort of ego on her own part.

Nor would she feel right with everyone putting all their hope on her and her alone, the sumo rangers are a team and its only through teamwork that they manage to come out on top against superior numbers and forces. In short, she is Diago’s complete freaking opposite.

Like any good Red ranger, Ashley is capable of making split second decisions in the heat of battle (as well as keeping a level head no matter how weird or random the monsters the sumo rangers face off against). When not in battle, Ashley works either on her own training or helping with the training techniques of her fellow rangers and improving the team’s overall teamwork.

When she isn’t training or sparring in the sumo ring, Ashley prefers listening to her extensive jazz collection, heading out into the city to see a movie, visit a local measure, see what’s happening in the local jazz scene, ect.

Although not a very good dancer solo, Ashe is decently skilled when doing a two-person dance with a partner ala the Waltz. As for Charleston Banks from Fresh Prince, he’s mostly there to symbol her less stereotypical traits as a character.

As for the center pic, Korra’s head represents’ Ashley’s confidence and self-assured nature, which is not to be confused with ‘sass’ (though she does have her deadpan moments). Her body (taken from here axel-rosered.deviantart.com/ar… ) is more to show her general/broad strokes size and is not a completely accurate representation of what she physically looks like.

That will be saved for a future set of collages.

A final thing to note about the suit on the far left was originally done by a friend of mine and based more of the short-sleeved leotards that female sumos wear. The arms and gloves were later additions by me.
