There's probably an alternate universe where Peony was actually a happy kid who absolutely adores everything and had the courage the love everything and BB was actually a kid who was willing to let others give feelings to him without freezing them up. This is just a result of a hopeful thought that never happened.

BB was first adopted to a family that was falling apart and was expected to glue it back together, he failed to do that because he's only a kid and the isolation he had gone under at the orphanage (literally no other kid wanted to touch him besides Neko) made him even colder and reclusive and scared to open up to anyone. Which is sad because he really could've bonded with Peony if he tried to and if Peony actually was willing to accept BB.

That never happened, there is a faint artificial fondness that develops with time and having to live in the same house together but after something catastrophic happened he refused to even look at Peony.
