Description
Castle Keep, Newcastle

Newcastle upon Tyne gets its name from this Norman keep.  It was built in the 1170s on the site of earlier fortifications.  You get a good impression of how imposing this would have been in the middle-ages.  The fresh-looking masonry in some of the walls shows that these have been renovated.  The Keep was closed to the public for a while but is due to reopen in Spring 2015.

From this angle, the keep looks really imposing. Great shot, photos taken in such good weather look really beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you.

In March the sun is always quite low in the sky this far north and that helped give the walls a warm, yellowish tone. But the weather was very unsettled so I had to grab the shot quickly. The main problem photographing this castle is that there are usually loads of cars parked in front of it which spoil the picture. That day there was only one.

Thank you! As you can see from the clouds, the sunshine was very patchy - you had to grab a shot while you could.

I think it would be so awesome to live somewhere that one can just be driving along and suddenly- hey look. A castle.

Sure, we have the most well-preserved Spanish presidio in North America just down the road from me but...not quite the same.

Yes, Britain has lots of castles. Well worth a visit if you can make it sometime.

Many of them are in ruins because they were deliberately gutted at the end of the Civil War of the 1640s to prevent something similar happening again. This one would probably have had white lime-wash on the outside to make it really stand out in the landscape.
