Description ·
Queen Victoria Post Box, Newcastle

Iron post boxes were invented in mainland Europe but the introduction of the first prepaid postage stamps in Britain made them even more useful.

This one dates from the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), her initials (VR) are marked on the front.  It is in the Chinatown district of Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England.  Remarkably it has survived over 125 years of exposure to everything from dogs to wartime bombs, not to mention the British weather.

Later designs are cylindrical rather than octagonal, and less ornate, but a bit better at keeping the rain out.

Motorola smartphone, edited in Photoshop Elements.  Constructive criticism welcome.
