Smithy at St Fagans Museum

St Fagans is an outdoor museum near Cardiff in Wales, UK. Buildings of historic interest have been collected from around Wales and reassembled on the site to illustrate ways of life in the past.

This building, the Llawr-y-glyn Smithy, dates from the late 18th Century. It was operational until the mid 1960s and moved to the current location about 1970. Smithies were a key part of rural communities, making everything from horseshoes to hinges and repairing or maintaining all kinds of equipment. The museum runs courses in blacksmithing to help keep the skills alive.
