Description 'Her Jealousy Would Give Her no Rest'

‘Then she thought, and thought again, how she could rid herself of Snow White -- for as long as long as she was not the most beautiful woman in the entire land her jealousy would give her no rest.’ A childhood fear I had of fictional villains was the inspiration for this piece. It seems I’ve matured, however, in the sense that I no longer feel this way – especially about the Wicked Queen from ‘Snow White’. I can now sympathize with the Queen’s madness and jealousy and pity her unrelenting struggle to attain perfect beauty. I attempted to portray this theme of madness and jealousy through the Queen’s hand gestures. The Queen’s hands come forward from the storybook, offering the viewer the poisonous apple in desperation. She does not tempt the viewer, she forcefully thrusts the apple forward – my attempt at displaying this ‘madness’. When viewing ‘Her Jealousy Would Give Her no Rest’ one should note that ‘Snow White’ is never actually stated. I made a point of rephrasing the story quotes, when necessary, in an effort to retain the central concept that this piece revolves around the Wicked Queen’s character and the plot she carries out in order to attain perfection.
The high profile material is the book itself, and the torn pages which were folded and detailed with phrases from – this material choice abstractly explains the motives of the Queen and, from an aesthetic perspective, creates a sharp contrast between the messy, unruly pages in the book to the porcelain-looking hands and seemingly perfect apple.

UHHH.
this is the project I've been working on for the past 20 + hours. (5ish hours for this one, the other 15 were spent getting comfortable with the materials/failing).
The above paragraph(s) is the artist statement I'm submitting with the piece. It pretty much sums everything up, so I dont have to explain much here. xD let me just emphasize:
this was really, really, ridonkulously hard to do.
TALK ABOUT STEPPING OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE. :[

WOW!!! The time and careful consideration spent on this project is is extremely visiable! I love all the details involved: the postion of the hands, the book, the torn pages, the ink splotches. In the title, the letter (a) is missing in jealousy. Surprisingly, the hands and the book pages don't blend together but rather add to the whole idea that her hands are coming out from within the book. However I do think the background that the book is laying on does drown out the pages and the hand; making it look too nuetral. so my suggestion is that it would look more vibrant and luring if it were on a darker background. A black background usually works but in this case it may make it look too... it might make it look like the book was pasted onto the background. So maybe a darker red like burgundy, although burgundy is not considered a red. If the color was too red it would by a cut and paste or too bloody influenced. So how about a dark rich wine color or burgundy color in a crushed velvet form. Try to get both corners inside the frame of the picture/photo. The angle of the picture is perfect and doesn't take anything away from the concept but rather adds to it like an invisiable frame...

Wow what an awesome concept! I love the torn paper and splashed ink, and the whole coming out of the book thing is pretty amazing You did a fabulous job with the sculpture, as well; it looks perfect, and the texture is great!

Is that sculpey? Also, are you going to paint it? I think it would look great either way. It looks cool in monochrome too

Nice!!

The hands are really well sculpted! They look quite realistic, especially how the hand is holding the apple.

Well done!
I hope you score good marks for this!

ps. What materials did you use?

Cool!

So you made a plaster mold and then cast it in wax, nice. That's the smart way of doing it I guess. I was thinking that maybe you sculpted it, and was wondering how I'd go about doing it (very much the wrong way apparently! ).

Well it turned out great anyways!

Oh yeah, though you might like it.
Oh oh oh..... I don't think I get Mad TV in Australia, at least not on free to air TV anyways =S Damn it!! So Ed Bassmaster is going to be on Mad eh? Is he going to be a regular, or just a guest? I hope he takes his pug and does some pug skits
