Description And now, for my 200th deviation... another Super Tomcat feature! And yes, this deviation features none other than the VF-31 Tomcatters, the coincidental namesake of the F-14 Tomcat and the last ever US Navy squadron to fly the Tomcat.

This is a two-view profile of the NK104 VF-31 Tomcatters F-14D Super Tomcat stationed aboard the CVN-72 Abraham Lincoln, with a low-visibility version of the VF-31 decal scheme.

And yes, the mascot of VF-31 is none other than the famous cartoon character, Felix the Cat, holding a lit bomb in his hands in a running pose.

Well, since I was aiming for a basic low-vis rendition of the F-14D, I chose a VF-31 one, and I just love the fact that Felix is VF-31's mascot - basically, I love the idea of popular cartoon characters being painted on warplanes; something that's no longer as common as it was back in WWII.

Anyways, thanks!

Heh, I was bouncing around your gallery when I came upon this. I remember when I was the Roosevelt, seeing the Super Tomcats as they were first deployed with VF-41 (I think? Can't remember for sure, this was over 10 years ago). Good memories.

Aww... now I'm sad. You just made me remember the very aircraft that turned me into an aircraft otaku~ T_T

Huh? You too?

Well, I guess there's yet another something that we can both relate to...

Being born in the 80's, I can attribute my childhood love of the F-14 to exposure to Top Gun and Macross~

Shame the airframe seem to be unsupported politically since day 1.

I'm still not completely sure about the stupid politicians or anything (they can be real confusing, indecisive, and clueless), but swing-wing aircraft, let alone carrier-based ones, are also maintenance hogs, unfortunately.
Even if the F-14 wasn't retired back in 2006, the worldwide economic downturn these days would have still euthanized the poor 'Cat.

If they haven't made the Tomcat a Swing wing, it would have prolly served longer like what i've also thought before..

and that the fact they give it TF30 Turbofans whilst the F-15 having F100s..

There should have been a Naval F-15 Instead

Sweet, I was just listening to the Top Gun anthem when this deviation came out. Really cool seeing a Tomcatters bird.

Congrats on the big 200.

Not only does the squadron have the same name (by coincidence) as their previous mount (as of today), they also have the wonderfully famous Felix the Cat as their mascot.

Anyways, thanks again! Top Gun FTW.
