I trust this was not as close as it appears. What lens did you use?

It was not - though closer than you might think, beacuse this one lives in a zoo in Germany. I was about 4 meters away. 

It's shot with a NikonD5100 with a 70-300 lens.

Even so, a remarkable picture. That sounds like a very useful lens: 4x zoom, not too extreme, but flexible enough to be handy.

This... Is beautiful.

The heart-stopping moment of the singe glance is captured perfectly in this concise, wonderfully-taken photograph. The calm intensity of his gaze works well with the angling of the picture - heaven knows how you manages such a beautiful shot, but it was certainly worth it
