Aside Ryumihyoh (the Mithra cat girl - in game terms, the player controlled character), the other is the Zilartian prince Eald'Narche, who has decided that since the five races of Vana'Diel (the world where they reside) are "imperfect" since ages - the lore is actually complex - he wants to open the Gates of Paradise to attain perfection, and that means the annihilation of all the "imperfect world". This briefly sums up the Final Fantasy XI expansion this pic is based upon, Rise of the Zilart.

Well I simplified a lot, technically this story is part of a much bigger lore that is explored in the subsequent expansion, Chains of Promathia.

And I'm sure it's fascinating, but swapping the entirety of that lore back-and-forth here is hardly practical, so I guess we'll leave it at that.

Just wanted to add.
The Zilartian race was the first race created by the goddess. They were perfect in every way, but were not pleased with the world they were given to live in; they felt they were Gods and deserved to be in paradise with the rest of the Gods.
They began to build a teleportation device that would destroy their imperfect world and send them into paradise where the Gods were slumbering.
However, they were stopped by the Kuluu (Zilarts who had lost the ability to telepathically communicate). The teleport tower had a meltdown and the Zilart were destroyed.
Except for the prince and his brother. They slept for hundreds of years as the goddess created five new races. And the god, Promathia, gave them all weaknesses and feud to keep them busy from attempting the same fate.
When Eald'narche wakes up, he makes the playerbase do his dirty work and repair the teleport tower, in a way. The cutscene leading up to this fight is him asking us if we'd like to come up to paradise with him. When we refuse, because we want our world and loved ones to remain intact, he fights us.
And in the end he loses.
