An interesting subject. Is this staircase all that remains? Alone like this, it practically constitutes what we'd here call an (Architectural) folly.

Thanks Jeff. I would say yes and no for architectural folly. Yes because there was never a castle in the true sense of the word even though it's been coined as such locally. It was however part of a lavish mansion which has since burned down leaving nothing but bare bones like the stone staircase and parts of the foundation.
