Thank you very much Rock Creek is a pretty normal park and even though it's technically located in Washington DC, I've seen many similar windy roads when you drive out in the country pretty much all over the place. Of course I had a little fun with the leaf colors in Photoshop

You are so very welcome. I love the technique that you use in this wonderful photo "HDR composite from multiple exposures." I wish I understood how to do this. I would love to give it a try myself.

Start with a tripod, bracket your exposures and tell your camera to include RAW files. Feel free to follow up with me

Thanks for the information, I still don't think I know enough to try it out yet.

If you can get past or already know how to use a tripod with manual camera settings, I would say that's the most important step. I'm the type of person who learns things through painstaking trial and error because I'm not what you would call IQ smart. So with photography I started first with easing myself into using a tripod then bracketing the exposures with zero knowledge about HDR.

The bracketing function itself is pretty easy to set for cameras that allow it and it's best to include RAW files. Don't think so much about how it will look in HDR, I bracketed before I dared to make a leap of faith into HDR. If anything, the bracketing can help you choose a photo with the right exposure value (from a set of 3 photos or more) because the camera meter can often fool you. Meanwhile, you're building up a bank of photo series ripe for HDR processing once you feel comfortable enough to experiment with it

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and your kindness, I appreciate it very much. I have to push myself to get over my fear of how to use my camera properly and stop depending on the semi-automatic mode settings! Thanks so much for your encouragement!

Thanks Eve The colours were tweaked from Sepia Foliage action *wink wink* Changed the yellow Selective Color values beneath the mixer and again above all the layers

boldfrontiers In reply to EveLivesey [2014-04-25 18:36:24 +0000 UTC]

I could give you the yellow values, but as it depends on the existing shades of green in the foliage, I think the values would be different from one image to the next. What I remember is that I adjusted the yellows considerably under the mixer to get the general feel of it, then more minor yellow tweaks above all the layers for the golden finish.

Exact markers on the road...no... But I do know the road.  Driven it a few times as a nice little cruise.  I'm not sure if you hail from that region (saw a few locations around there in your gallery....Great falls, DC, etc), but if so, have you ever gone down to Sligo Creek Park for some shooting?  Its very scenic like Rock Creek, but with the added bonus of a nice babbling stream.  Also if you get a chance, check out the Adelphi Mill and the path leading away from it.

Recently moved back to the DC area from Montreal, so I'm open to any and all suggestions, thank you Anything with clear streaming water draws me in like a moth to a flame, gives me an excuse to use my neutral density filter Are Sligo Creek Park and Adelphi Mill relatively close to Bethesda? I have a car and on a regular day willing to drive 2 hours out.

Oh boy...a Bethesda guy eh?  My grandmother lives in that area..kinda suburbs of.

Yeah, Sligo is pretty close; you're looking at less than 30 min or less depending on traffic(take the back roads), its close to Silver Spring area.

Adelphi is a little farther away, PG county but its easy to get to.  I head out to Wheaton (Wheaton Plaza area), then hop on University Blvd and head to PG county.  Stay on University until you see Tick-Tock Liquor Store and turn down the road next to it.  (Sorry, I dont remember the street name)  The mill will be a little ways down on your left.

Other suggestions might include the gardens next to Wheaton Regional Park, and Cabin John is great if you want to get some cool shot of a farily rustic kids train running through the woods.

Feel free to PM me anytime about suggestions and such.  And go get a bagel from Bethesda Bagels for me.  Something about their bagels...dont know what...

Yep! Grew up in Bethesda, moved to Montreal at 18 for university for cheaper education as I was born in Canada. Now happy to return in the DC area after 14 years, parents stayed here and my father has since passed away in 2010... he made me promise I take good care of my mother as he knew he was on borrowed time, and my Green Card application took a very long time to get approved, but I'm finally in and eager to capture the sights around me!

Well its very good to hear that you made it back.  That area has a lot of really nice scenic areas to shoot in.  I personally am stuck in Cape May, NJ right now, but I spent all of my summers in Bethesda with my grandparents who live there.  One day maybe I will make it back.

I'm discovering new places here, it's a very nice area I read somewhere there were some great waterfalls in New Jersey, would you recommend any in particular?

I cant say I really know of any in NJ.  I'm from the southern most tip, and I really dont go exploring the state much.

I have to say, I was actually here on Sunday, and it is just spectacular.  I didnt take any pics, but its hard to while cruising on a motorcycle.  But it made me think one day I need to take a longer trip to the area and spend some serious art time around town
