Description Background Information
This is a concept I made based on Microsoft's Metro UI. This concept brings Metro to the desktop and includes something I would love to see in future versions of Windows.

Windows - Social Sidebar
A Social Sidebar has been integrated into the desktop, which can be shown or hidden by clicking on the gradient strip on the right-hand side of the sidebar. When opened, you can easily view and interact with any social network you choose. I left Twitter selected as an example. I feel that this would be something nearly every Windows user would make good use of.

Windows - Taskbar
The taskbar is mostly the same, and you would have the option to combine applications and hide labels ala Windows 7. I just feel that the expanded text view would better match the Metro design. The Photoshop picture popup represents the preview of that particular window, I left it blank in this concept.

Steam - General Information
Also included in this concept is a Metro version of Valve's Steam platform. It basically takes all it's cues from the Zune Software by Microsoft, and follows the exact same design.

Steam - Friends List
The friends list is a little mashup of my own that uses a mini picture that the Zune Software uses for the album art to show your friend's avatars. I tried to integrate the side gradient in a feasible way by putting it behind your information making it easily recognized and discernible from your friends.

Steam - Chat Window
The chat window is fairly simple, and has the options Steam currently has built-in. You can toggle between multiple conversations by selecting the name of the friend you would like to chat with in the titlebar.

It took a lot of time to make this concept, but I feel that I did a decent job accomplishing my goal; bringing Metro to the desktop while keeping usability in-tact.

Note: Those tweets are not real, regardless of how much I wish they were.

I don't have any plans to make this a reality.

At one point the MetroTwit theme looked more or less exactly like this. It's outdated now, though.

This is cool and would make sense. But the Windows 8 previews I've seen just have a touch-based metro interface and when you use desktop applications, it just switches to Aero. :/

Good news! Microsoft decided to make Windows 8 based on Metro! (Along with the newest versions of everything they make.) Bad/good news, (depending on how you look at it,) they took it in a completely different direction than you did! Now what do you think about that? xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

BoneyardBrew In reply to MASTER260 [2011-08-21 16:07:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes, very good news! I actually love what they did.

When I did this redesign I took what we had now (Aero) and made it Metro. What they did was think out of the box and make it more of a Windows Phone 7 experience on your desktop. I can't wait to try it!

Actually, this looks a little like the non-glass version of the Aero Lite theme Win 8's gonaa include, but, whatever...

One more thing I would like to ask: When an item in the taskbar is selected or hovered (like a minimized task), does it change its background color? Or is it still white? If it doesn't change, how will you know what you've clicked on in a notification area if there is no visual indicator of it being selected?

Why is there no notification area and why is the search where the notification area is supposed to be?

You know, that's one thing I overlooked with this concept. I am terrible at designing icons, so I try to avoid it anytime I can.

Thanks for pointing that out though.

I can't wait to see your theme though!

Ah, that is unfortunate. I'll publish my concept tonight. Theme building has become easier with Windows 7 Style Builder. You should try it sometime.

I did post it on Twitter and direct it to a few Microsoft employees though.

Love metro ui. I love this, gotta say. I wish it was a legit windows skin. What fonts did you use?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoneyardBrew In reply to Isaac-Weyard [2010-05-27 01:04:45 +0000 UTC]

I mostly used Zegoe UI Semibold and Light weights. I used Segoe UI on a few parts as well if my memory serves me right.

BoneyardBrew In reply to savagealien [2010-05-18 19:17:36 +0000 UTC]

Zegoe UI Semibold.

Segoe UI Semibold could also be used as a substitute since both fonts look very similar.

i really love this! i love how it's all based on the same theme, now i know that sounds like a ridiculously obvious comment but i'll explain.

in some themes, some of them aren't carefully thought out and you sometimes get other programs that look default, and stray from the design even in concepts! but this looks amazing! i love the simplicity, but how it looks modern and elegant all at the same time

just wish it was real!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BoneyardBrew In reply to musicislife1995 [2010-05-05 20:14:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the comment!

That's what Metro is all about, everything should be consistent, simple, but attractive and easy on the eyes at the same time.

Thanks again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

musicislife1995 In reply to BoneyardBrew [2010-05-06 18:27:24 +0000 UTC]

its good, because you get some themes or concepts that the white is just too harsh. but with this one you have flashes of colour and the greys make it modern, breaks it up a bit but also make it relaxed

to make it perfect or look perfect like that is quite difficult, and you nailed it.

your welcome!
