Description The African leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) is the nominate subspecies of the leopard, native to many countries in Africa. They inhabit a range of habitats, varying from scrubland, semi-arid, savannahs, bush, riverine forests, mountainous lowland forests, and rocky outcrops. Strong and graceful, this big cat is home up a tree and on the ground. In fact, it will drag its kill, perhaps a 200 pound antelope into a tree to keep it safe from scavengers. The leopard has a long body, powerful legs and a large head. Stealthy and cunning, it will stalk its prey before it pounces and bite the back of the prey's neck, paralyzing it instantly. It them wraps its enormous jaws around the victim's neck to suffocate it.

Color: Pelage varies from tawny to deep gold to a pale yellow with black rosettes that do not have a central spot. The head, belly, and the lower parts of the limbs have solid black spots. Melanistic African leopards are black all over the body, but on closer inspection and under certain lights the spots become visible.

Behavior: African leopards are solitary felines and are only seen together with another leopard during the mating season or in cases of a female with her cubs.

Size: African leopards grow to a length of around 4.25-6.25 ft. Tail length usually reaches 3.5-4.5 ft. Males are larger and heavier than females. Average weight for males is around 130 lbs, with the largest at 201 lbs being the maximum weight. While females weight in 77 to 88 lbs.
