Once-upon-a-time under a tree far, far away...I can't paint buildings and I never paint buildings... or at least that's what I usually tell myself when I can't be bothered to do a proper background to a cat or dog or bird or unidentifiable fuzzy thing I just drew. So what do I do? I draw a whole glowy village... hm, no more excuses I guess..
Mind you, this took bloody ages (by my impatient standards), but there's something about painting white on black that's really quite therapeutic. Something to do with the unusual contrast maybe...
*I'm not happy with the sloppy detail in this (AND I spilt red paint on it
). May do some more work to it some time...

Wow, this is good. I really like the whole look of it, it looks like somewhere in a fantastical version of the Mediterranean. I'm so terrible at thinking "backwards" when it comes to drawing on black.

I used to find it tricky too, but in high school I started doing a series of experiments on just capturing the light on an object rather than the object itself. Good practise, and it feels so satisfying on dark paper...
Mediterranean... interesting. I was thinking that myself whan I was about halfway through, even though I started off trying to do something more oriental

It's cool. I always loved the idea of a town built around a ginormous tree. I think you've done well. I also think that if you drew buildings that wer rounder at the edges(like pueblos) they would come more easily to you and fit well with the rest of your style. Which is not to say that you can't do all sorts of buildings, obviously, becaust this rocks.

I googled these pueblos you mentioned... amazing - I'd love to live in one of those, if only there were a little more greenery... have you ever visited one? I also love old houses that carve themselves into the moutains, like the yaodong cave-dwellings in Northern China, or the palaces really high up in.. uh, I can't remember where at this early hour.. ooh, I feel a new picture idea coming up...
