Description Four rows of mesh cages, grey and transparent like clouds but so much more substantial. The Chinchilla Standard Senior Doe, stationed above the second-place rabbit of the same breed, huddles in front of the cage. Every breath she takes moves her body, the fur of her silvery face twitching in time with the flare of her triangular nose. She slides her forefeet in front of her, settling them beneath the ruff-like pouch that swallows her chin as she adjusts her body into a comfortable position. Her pants move the stand, setting the water in her dish swaying. She starts as I step near, feet visible as the ruff peels back. Hunched on her haunches, front legs straight, the bulge on her neck recedes into something more manageable--a turtleneck instead of a parka. She stretches her forepaws again, kneading the shredded woodchips, then swivels her head to squeeze her nose through the parallel bars. She faces me now, ears wagging a beat after the twitch of the nose and face. As she turns, I see "O3" tattooed in black inside her left ear as she ducks her head and tilts sideways to snag a pellet from the neighboring rabbit's cage.
