Yeah, they definatly are! They usually strike in moments my shutter just closed or when I just want to press the shutter button.. -.-

I know about the Bulb mode, but I don't have a remote for my camera yet. What I usually do is set my camera to make about 10 shots with 20-30sec exposure time so that I do get 5 (almost full) minutes of exposure, yet it happened a few times already that right when the shutter closed for one second, lightning striked. When the shutter opened again after that second, it was already too late. Very frustrating!
Hmmm, that rubber band and eraser thing does sound like a good solution.. But won't you get problems with movement?

Yea I don't have a remote either - but I do have a tripod that I use as well as the "self timer" of 2 seconds to get it steady before the shot. Pity about your shots always being out of sync with the lightning!
For this shot I leaned against the wall, held the shutter down, got the lightning 1 second later, and released - this is why I (luckily) didn't get any blur on this shot, but obviously if you were to do this for 30 seconds the background would get super blurry.
You are right, the rubber band would need to be used in conjunction with a tripod to reduce the movement.
