Description A pair of travelers (human and a giant) coming across an obsidian giant in the mountains.

EDIT: I messed up with my math and made the travelers a lil too small. Fixed. Sorry if you liked the previous size, but it was too inaccurate! ^^

Is it safe for a human to explore an Obsidian Gaint's body ?

I wonder. Let's say you're an artist looking for some inspiration from nature. How would most obsidian respond if you asked if you could paint them after seeing something you considered awe inspiring? That or I wonder how they'd respond if you didn't ask but just tried to remain out of site while working.

If you could get their attention they probably would say "okay". They're supposed to be very neutral, and in turn don't like helping people out and giving them an unfair advantage (like if you were being chased by a giant naga they'd avoid saving you because, in their eyes, it'd be unfair to let the naga starve and it'd be more fair to not intervene) But painting one seems pretty harmless so I imagine if you could get within hearing distance of their ear they would be totally fine about sitting still.

If you didn't ask.... hmm. I think they probably wouldn't notice what you were doing and if they needed to get up and walk away they would without a second thought.

Well that's how they choose to live their life trusting in their own size and strength so it's their call. It does bring up the issue if some bacteria or virus developed so that it could become a deadly sickness to them would they ask for help. After all humans as a rather vulnerable bunch have lots of experience dealing with and being killed by sickness. I wonder if gnat faries could even turn out to be carriers of the illness. As for the naga. I swear in such settings I always wonder why the humans don't just conceal a small brick of arsenic or some other poison. Sure it won't save your life but perhaps you'll take your killer with you. Then again I am a very vengeful person and would probably want to bring something to attack the smooth muscle of the heart, another for the nervous system and probably something to prevent the blood from being oxygenated. Probably leave my family a diary detailing what poison I used in the event it didn't do the job in hopes of it helping people find one that will.

I bet some people would carry around a poison like that. Other more simple people would probably just follow a guide through the woods and hope they get through safely. Maybe some people study naga and search for some sort of weakness/poison that would take them down? There's tons of open endedness really since this is a fairly new world idea. (A journal left behind is pretty smart by the way.)

If an obsidian came down with an illness and they had to seek help, I'd guess that they'd seek help from something much larger than humans since communicating with them is hard and walking to a civilized place is asking for disaster. There are a couple more races I forgot to add or simply didn't have room in the original like Dersert Naga (6 armed variation), Gorgons (snake haired people), and large Mermaid type people. Maybe one of them can be good at medicine. I just have to fill up the environments that each of them live in. Forests are fairly populated, there's plenty of civilized areas and races that populate them, but Oceans are empty, I was planning a Desert area and Mountains could use one more.

Then maybe I'll develop a map (or get someone to do that. Geography has some science to it which I'm not familiar with) and need to make up a name for the world/universe and maybe make some specific areas/cities.

Well the nice thing about poison is if nothing else you can use it on yourself to avoid a painful death. If I'm not mistaken some soldiers and people did indeed pack small bottles of it for that reason. Well those wealthy enough to afford them. It's nice that some humans in your setting would consider such studies. Quite often the humans in such stories seem more like sheep that just accept their roll. As for the journal, thanks.

That may indeed be the case though i believe a humans small size might help in examination. With their isolationist way of living I imagine their parents pass down quite a few skills for survival. Such as what minerals serve to promote healing. They could of course go speak with the frost giants and look into magic healing but it seems like that would feed the frost ego quite a bit. Still, I do wonder how much isolation even an obsidian can handle. Speaking of humans as an animal how different is the chemistry of an obsidian's brain if they don't have the same desire for social interaction?

You do have a point. Usually they have absolutely no chance and just accept their fate. There probably should be some people smart enough to try and "fight" back against their predators to a degree. Or at least have a chance of escape rather than hardly trying.

I figured that's why you said humans. They could examine certain places easily at their size sort of. (It'd take them a while to walk from one shoulder to get around their bodies.) I imagined obsidians as very quiet and very shy and not eager to talk with anyone unless they need to. And to them, small races like humans are just like squirrels or pidgeons or bugs. If you're walking around the park and you see one of those animals you don't really think about and you don't really bother them. You don't regard them as something you'd want to interact with. You just think "Oh look a squirrel..." and continue walking. They'd be more interested in something closer to their size, unless the human goes right up to them and speaks to them.

Glacial giants could be a good medical race since I wrote them up as living in snowy peaks, which could potentially be very close to obsidians who live in mountains as well. The glacials just have to make sure they don't let their egos say anything stupid while they're operating.

Whooaaahhh f**k... O_O and when ya realize one of'em is a giantess, that really puts this thing into some perspective. Yeah, maybe the smallest type, but still.

The phases one likely goes through in this kind of an encounter, such as seein' it, having disbelief... then knowing its there and then finally shock and awe... and all that before the big one really lookin' back. Then it goes up to eleven. XD

Seriously, didn't you describe Obsidians as beings that barely may give a look at anyone besides from watchin' out from steppin' on, making this even more overwhelming an experience? =3

I imagine they don't into people much in the mountains so they'd probably instinctively glance at unexpected motion out of the corner of their eyes... and then go back to whatever it is they were doing!

It would be a "...impossible" moment if you never encountered something so huge before in your life. Puts things into perspective.

I feels as though this is another case where camera angle makes the scale seems a bit strange. Perspective can be weird like that.

Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome picture! Would it look how I imagine it would from another angle (say, if the camera was square to the obsidian giant's shoulders.

Beyond that. I love the giant's look and feel. All the grey works well against the background. And I love her hair

Naw I prolly just messed up the size or something. I had to divide everyone's size by a decimal number so they'd fit into view without any distortion so my math may have been off.

Amanardra In reply to BoomGTS [2012-11-15 05:16:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, perhaps the easier question to ask is this: Are the two pictures the "same," just from a different angle? Or did the location of the human and giant change in relation to the obsidian giant's eye? That's probably the source of the distortion. The picture with the eye looks like they are waaaay closer than in this one.
