Yesterday I started experimenting with downloading new brush packs to Sketchbook, and while a LOT of them were super cool, I needed some brushes more specific. So I spent my evening creating my own custom brushes made up of different kinds of vegetation like leaves and grass, which is what you can see in the foreground, trees and ground! It makes landscape paintings SO much more fun, since I can now make them look decent without ragequitting out of frustration because the brushes I'm using just aren't quite good enough. Can't believe I haven't figured I could just make my own brushes sooner.

So why not make some more concept art for Beyond our Borders while I'm giving my new brushes a go? I went for a little more "simple" style with more blocky shapes and flat colors, just to make it a little easier for me to block out the scene I had in mind. Took maybe 4 hours to make.
The character you see is K'Tala, an Okapi who dabbles in wiccan-like arts, who lives secluded from the rest of the Equestrian society for personal reasons. You can see her rarely wandering towns around summertimes, and she keeps some contact with the Hitchocki tribe medicine mares to share recipies, discoveries and herbs with one another. K'Tala isn't a character that will make a lot of appearances in the comic, but she'll play a bigger role in later chapters. I'll do my best to differentiate her from Zecora so they're both not just swamp-dwelling witches, but sometimes it's difficult being 100% original with these things, and for K-Tala's storyline it makes sense for her to be who she is. I'll try though! I do want my characters to be at least a LITTLE original, lmao.
