At the end of the 19'th century, after a relentless bovine epidemic, was a schism between two african tribes, and the Himba identity came into being.
Himba means beggar, because after the schism, many of them remained in search of cattle and crop asking fellow tribe members for help.
Now they have a population of around 50 000 people, and are semi-nomadic.
Most of their cultures have been upheld despite western influence and agitation.
They are stil wearing traditional clothing and keep their rituals,are famous for the look of their women, who never wash with water, but make smoke baths, and cover their bodies with a mixture of butter fat and ochre pigment, that helps them cleanse their skin very long periods of time, and protect them from extreme hot and dry climate, and insect bites. The mixture is often perfumed with aromatic resin.
Hairstyle and jewelry play a significant role, indicating the age and social status.Young girls have two braided plaits extended toward the face.
When the girls have completed their puberty ceremony, the so-called ekori festival takes place and she receives the ekori headdress made from tanned sheep’s or goatskin with three leaf-shaped points, often decorated with iron beads.
