Description My concepts for the Scarecrow and Steam Woodsman costumes for my Dragon*Con costume group. Finished up the goggled, nested, birded straw tophat for the Scarecrow a few days back. Working on his hand extensions now. The performer's a stilt-walker amongst his many talents, so he's making peg stilts for this, and since he's already 6'4" and lanky, it should be a really impressive effect. We're starting major production on the Steam Woodsman this week, although I've had his hand working for a little while. We're going to try a periscope illusion in the chest so you can see through him to the other side where he's missing his heart. He'll be on platform boots and the chest piece should really bulk him out, so he should also look pretty imposing. Lots of fun stuff with these two! Dorothy's coming together too, but my drawings for her haven't been as interesting... yet.

I love the scarecrow! Such an aristocrat.

Thanks! We're trying to give him a kind of Mark Twain feel, especially with the bushy straw mustache. Vest/coat is in a kind of burlap material, hat's straw, pants are patchy, so that should help keep him from looking too posh.

The perfect hollow headed aristocrat! Not too sure about the tin mans design though, he seems too bulky whereas the lion and the scarecrow are more sleek and linear, hes more horizontal and chunky.

Well, we've got to get a guy in it, and the things we're trying to do require a bit of chunkyness. Check out Genci's Tin Woodsman for a cool, linear design that looks great, but could not be a costume: [link]

That would fit more with your gang, but youre right, it wouldnt be a very good costume

He does some good work.

I kind of like the woodsman being bulky, myself. The lion played by me isn't going to be lean (I'm a fairly stocky fellow), and the woodsman being bulky will make the scarecrow seem that much scrawnier by comparison. I'm 6'4", on stilts the scarecrow should be somewhere between 7 and 8 feet tall, the woodsman will likely be close to that with his hat on, and our Dorothy is just a little more than 5 feet tall. Tin Man and I make Scarecrow look thinner, and we all make Dorothy look smaller. Should work out well.

I like the Woodsman's "Iron Giant" look.

I just looked for a link, but it seems to be dead. There was this artist who did up a costume based on Goldie Hawn's character from the film Death Becomes Her... after Hawn's character got a shotgun blast through her midriff... The artist sculpted pieces for an entrance and exit wound and created the illusion of a hole through her middle with a teeny digital video camera and monitor thing. Camera in back, monitor in front. The camera picked up images of whatever was behind her so you could see these images on the monitor, so that it looked like you were seeing through her via the hole in her stomach... I was thinking you could do something like that for the illusion of the Woodsman's missing heart?

The artist's name is Nicole Magne (she also did a headless Marie Antoinette costume which appeared in the Halloween 2007 issue of Make), but like I said, the link to her blog seems to be dead...

Yeah, that was something we'd heard about early on. We're going to try and just do it with mirrors like a periscope, though. When we fail, though, we'll kick ourselves for not investing in a camera/screen setup.

Oh wow, I'm really excited about seeing these costumes come to life! The stilts will look great! And I'm really fascinated to see how the periscopic heart-hole works out.

Thanks, I'm excited too! Part of why I do some of these things is just to get to see them.
