Description

THE OVARO REGION

Introducing: The Ovaro Region! So I first designed this around 2010/11 after Black and White were first released, and I really wanted to challenge myself to make my own region filled completely with my own Fakemon. The region itself isn't necessarily inspired by any land in particular, but the towns, cities and locations are largely my own homages to America and parts of its culture which fascinate me as an outsider: swamps, the wild west, bustling cities, beautiful mountain areas etc.

The games I imagine taking place within the Ovaro Region would be set in a world where The Pokemon League collapse ten years ago, and the games would largely be driven by the plot, and, in place of the leaders, would be important characters the trainer would have to battle in order to progress through the game.

Since the region is my own Kanto/Unova, the towns and cities are named after colours in different languages.

(credit to GameFreak's own region maps for their buildings which I - sometimes - couldn't be bothered to draw)

MYTHOLOGY

When settlers first arrived in the Ovaro Region almost five hundred years ago, they came upon a deserted world of chaos which was ruled over by Washera and Ryguru – the two birds of chaos. Washera and Ryguru came to be known as the rulers of Ovaro, one symbolised famine and the desecration of the earth, the other represented thunderous storms and the turbulence of the air. Over time, the influence of Washera and Ryguru was diminished in the Ovaro region as order came to be. They have since disappeared from the region, but have been cemented within the local mythology.

Many people still acknowledge their presence today. The Ovaro Natives, a people who have lived in the region for almost a thousand years, witnessed first-hand the destruction of Washera and Ryguru, and they work to preserve heritage sites which honour the two birds. Another cult, named Team Rook, worship Washera and Ryguru, and perform many rituals in order to appease them. Though, many citizens of Ovaro see them as an inoffensive and kooky cult.

TOWNS AND CITIES

Arrosa Town – This small, coastal village sits in a peaceful area of the Ovaro Region, where the wind blows gently and the waves lap upon the shore softly. To the west is a small, rural hamlet, whereas to the east of the town is the more concentrated centre with the main, communal buildings.

Features: The player’s house, clock tower

Tympa City – A lake sits between Tympa City and Arossa Town. Tympa City is a rural and affluent area home to a prestigious school where budding trainers gather to learn more about Pokémon.

Features: The trainer school

Narinci City – This seafront city is famed for its gorgeous sunsets, a view of which can be taken at the city’s cape – considered to have the best view of the sunset in the whole region. It’s a popular area for youngsters on road trips. It is also home to the lab of Professor Coral, who specialises in marine biology.

Features: The Marine Lab, Narinci Apartments, The Sunset Hotel

Maitso City – This old city is steeped in superstition and tradition. It has had a longstanding spiritual relationship with the nearby swamp, where, according to the locals, spirits gather. To the south of the settlement rests the Maitso Cemetery.

Features: Maitso Mansion, Maitso Cemetery, Maitso Swamp

Amarelo Town – A few hundred years ago, when gold was discovered in the nearby mountains, Amarelo Town received a booming population as people arrived in hoards to mine their share of a fortune. As quickly as the gold was mined, the supplies vanished almost overnight, at which point everyone left. The result was an abandoned frontier town on the edge of the desert, which has since been turned into a historic tourist’s destination where visitors can view what frontier was like a two centuries ago.

Features: Amarelo Saloon, Amarelo Museum, Amarelo Inn

Vermell City – Vermell City was, and still is, a booming, industrious town. Nearby, mining still occurs in the mountains, whereas within the city a metal foundry provides work for residents. A few hundred years ago, a train linked Vermell City to Eastern Ovaro, which would carry supplies mined from the nearby area. The train is now largely obsolete, though its tracks are still carved through the mountains.

Features: The Vermell Foundry, The Vermell Mines, Vermell Train Station

Chumpi Town – Chumpi Town is a small village situated within the mountainous forests of the Ovaro Region. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Ovaro region, and home to a portion of Ovaro’s natives, as well as Team Rook – an old cult who worship the Birds of Chaos. Nearby rests the Lost Campsite.

Features: Chumpi Town Hall, Team Rook Nest, Lost Campsite

Nero City – By far the largest of all the cities in the Ovaro Region, Nero City is the first place most people saw when entering the region via boat. As such, it developed the largest and most diverse population. The modern day Nero City is the business district of the larger Nero City area, with Corcra City being the entertainment district of the Nero City area. Many of the looming skyscrapers were constructed by the architecture firm, The Cirrus Corp. It has many places of interest:

Features: Cirrus Corp Headquarters, The Golden Gyarados Restaurant, The Zigzagoon Lounge, Electric Fashion Publishing, Nero City Hotel, GameFreak Building, Silph Co. Ovaro Division, Nero City Apartments, Nero Subway Line, City Park, Nero Port

Lower-Nero Island – When settlers and migrants first arrived to the Ovaro region via boat, Lower Nero Island was where most of the boats disembarked. As such, it underwent a rapidly growing population and soon became incredibly overcrowded. Local governments lost control of the planning, and the island soon became a sprawling, concrete jungle where the buildings were metres apart and the sunlight could barely be seen from the ground. A few decades ago, the local government finally evacuated the city due to safety concerns, and now it stands as an ugly, abandoned island off the coast of Nero City, and is said to have become a haven for criminal activity. No boats run to the island any more, and thus the only access is through an abandoned subway line that runs under the water.

Features: The Black Market, Abandoned Subway Line

Corcra City – Officially the entertainment district of the Nero City area, Corcra City boasts a lively and diverse culture of arts. A subway line links it to Nero City.

Features: The Corcra Theatre Company, The Gallery of Modern Art, The Natural History Museum, The Nero City Stadium, Corcra City Hotel, Corcra Subway Line

Bela City – The most isolated settlement in the Ovaro Region, Bela City is surrounded by mountains and arctic landscapes. Much like Chumpi Town, it is home to many Ovaro Natives who lived in these tucked-away areas to avoid the wrath of Washera and Ryguru. The nearby, ancient shrines are said to hold secrets to summoning Washera and Ryguru.

Features: Fishing Shacks, Bela Tavern, Ancient Shrine

Vergrys City – Vergrys City is an up-and-coming area renowned for its modern architecture. It is home to the Ovaro Council, a board of five influential people who help govern the region. Vergrys is constantly changing and undergoing a lot of development, and currently in construction is The Roost – a skyscraper made by The Cirrus Corp, and set to be the tallest building in all of Ovaro.

Features: The Ovaro Council, The Roost

PLACES OF INTEREST

Narinci Cape – This hilly path takes people to what is often considered the best view of the sunset in all of Ovaro.

Narinci Forest – A small woodland area that rests between Narinci and Maitso City, home to various Pokémon.

Maitso Swamp – This dark and murky swamp is said to have a deep connection with local superstition. Some people reside within the swamp, living in isolation in order to practice witchcraft and cultivate a stronger connection with the spirits said to reside within the swamp.

The Wetlands – On the other side of the swamp are the Wetlands, where the water is deep, murky, but rife with tangling plants that mean it is impossible to traverse on foot or on the back of a Pokémon. A boatman runs regular trips across the Wetlands, though he is very superstitious and cautious about which passengers he takes. According to local folklore, the Wetlands were made to stop spirits from escaping the swamp. To this day, people believe evil spirits assume human forms and attempt to leave the swamp via boat, hence why the boatman is cautious.

Gold Mountain – Between Amarelo Town and Vermell City is a mountain within which many valuable gems have been found, which was the cause of a fleeting population boom in Amarelo Town.

Ovaro Desert – This arid landscape is the harshest environment in the whole of Ovaro. Its conditions mean that many unique Pokémon reside within the rocks and dunes.

Old Railroad Tunnels – These old tunnels were excavated through the mountains to serve as the main route for the old Vermell Train. The tunnels are largely abandoned now. It is said that, in the past, bandits and thieves used the tunnels as places to hide their loot.

The Vermell Canyon – The Vermell Canyon is a vast chasm carved through the mountains. According to legend, it was created as a result of a climactic battle between Washera and Ryguru. It served as a natural road that linked Eastern and Western Ovaro. As such, it was a popular route for merchants and traders to take a few hundred years ago, although, in turn, this made the canyon a dangerous place and a hotspot for bandits, who would hide amongst the rocks and ambush the travelling cargo.

The Unity Bridge – The Unity Bridge finished construction sixty years ago to replace the old rickety bridge for the train. It serves as both a symbolic and literal link between Eastern and Western Ovaro.

Maelstrom Bay – This perilous bay earned its name from the sea storms that would often end up here to die. The waters are filled with jagged rocks which make it nigh on impossible to access via boat, meaning that the cave here has been seldom explored.

Lost Campsite – This campsite used to be a favourite for children across the Ovaro Region to spend their summers. However, fifty years ago, its reputation plunged overnight as a group of children and their campsite leader went missing in the forest without a trace. Since then, people have speculated of its haunted nature, and few dare to go near it.

Hydroelectric Plant – A great reservoir and damn form the vital components to Ovaro’s Hydroelectric plant, set deep into the countryside and providing power for the large cities nearby.

The Black Market – This fabled bazaar is said to rest within the tall walls of Lower Nero City, a market that sells niche and rare items which other places in Ovaro would not sell. Access to the market is a largely hidden secret, though the player may find it with the right information.

Glass Cavern – This cave was given its name by the reflective and clear ice which is so abundant within.

Bela Shrine – A shrine that was constructed and guarded by the Ovaro Natives. It is a place of significant cultural importance, and is said to store the secret to summoning the Birds of Chaos.

Victory Road - Up until a few decades ago, this perilous cave was the ultimate gauntlet for budding Pokemon trainers. Since the League collapsed, it no longer holds as much cultural importance, though it is still a hotspot for strong trainers.

The Old Pokemon League - The Ovaro Region used to have a popular league system with Gyms and an Elite Four. However, corruption within the League lead to its collapse, and it was eventually reformed into The Ovaro Council. Now, the old Pokemon League building stands empty and derelict.

The shape isn't taken from anywhere in particular, but the towns/areas are inspired by places in the US
