"The Clankers...in a one on one fight, they're easily outsmarted, overpowered, and out gunned. But their real strength is in numbers. Remember: where there's one, there's a hundred." - BL-1707 "Able" briefing a squad of New Republic Soldiers prior to the Battle of Cato Neimoidia circa 25 ABY.

The B1 Battle Droid, once the infamous "face" of the Separatist Alliance, the B1 remains an enemy to not be taken lightly. A relatively cheaply built droid, a lone B1 poses little threat, but when faced in large numbers the B1 becomes a terrifying threat to even hardened soldiers. Modern New Republic strategists have likened the B1 to the Imperial TIE Fighter, i.e. a cheaply built machine meant to be a threat in large numbers with the expectation that such machines will be destroyed relatively easily, both intended to overwhelm the enemy by sheer numbers as opposed to superior tactics or firepower. Earlier models of B1 required the use of a Droid Control Ship to relay commands to the droids, and without these commands, their default response was to shut down. After the Battle of Naboo in 32 BBY, most remaining B1s were modified to instead carry out their last received commands until new instructions arrived. This allowed B1s to be deployed to locations without control signals.

The B1 came in two varieties, the basic B1 model which were more numerous and plentiful and the OOM model B1. The OOMs were smarter (although not by much) and were meant to serve as commanders, pilots engineers, etc. The primary means of distinguishing a B1 from an OOM was to make them talk. B1s spoke with a nasally voice capable of more expressive vocal tones. OOMs spoke with a more robotic, monotone voice. But both would regularly confirm new commands with a distinctive "Roger-roger." The OOM model actually predates the B1 model by at least five years and made up the vast bulk of the Trade Federation forces during the Invasion of Naboo.

After the Separatist Droid Armies were shut down at the end of the Clone Wars, the emerging Empire rounded up the majority of the droids and had them scrapped. A few B1s would be salvaged and re-purposed for various personal needs. A couple of examples include R0-GR or "Roger Freemaker" a repaired and re-purposed B1 with mismatched parts in the service of the Freemaker family. Another are Click, Clack, Clank, Crank, and Clunk, the team of B1s that make up the "Circus of Inane Silliness" droid comedy troupe as part of "Preigo's Traveling Galaxy of Wonders" (presently touring the core worlds).

Two years prior to the Shadow Wars, in 26 ABY, the B1s made a temporary return under the control of the senile former Trade Federation Senator Lott Dod who reactivated entire armies of B1s and unleashed them on the unsuspecting populace of Cato Neimoidia. The droids were eventually shut down by the New Republic. In 28 ABY, during the Shadow Wars, another, albeit forgotten and abandoned, force of B1s were found by Anakin Skywalker, his grandson Anakin Solo, and the assassin droid HK-47 on Dathomir inside of an old Separatist Lander. While both Anakins were away, HK-47 used his stored Separatist Droid Control codes to revive the droids and send them against an encroaching Sith Army, using the droids as a distraction so he and his masters could escape the planet. In 29 ABY, it was discovered that the crime lord, Tyber Zann and his Zann Consortium had begun to mass produce the B1s in large numbers from many of the same former Baktoid Armor Workshops droid factories that had been built for the Separatists during the Clone Wars. Zann is believed to have spent at least a decade and a half stockpiling these droids along with other Separatist era tech for his own purposes.
