Description Nothing too fancy here... I was trying to draw a decent shot of Magus/Janus Zeal, from Chrono Trigger, at least once in my life, haha. I wasn't too inspired for a pose, namely because he's a very clichéd character when you really think about it---now come on, he's got a scythe, and anybody who's got one's gotta be clichéd. (I have a character who has one, oops. I should fix that.)

I also just couldn't get myself to draw his utterly ugly costume design. He's got some sort of orange-bronze type bikini briefs, with gloves and boots to match, for crissakes. He also got confused on the way between the design and the sprite making---for some reason, Akira Toriyama's original rendition of him has a red cape, but in the game he was stuck with violet. I'm always wondering what happens in theses cases, like why FF6's Terra's hair mutated from blonde to green from paper to computer... and why Link in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has freaky pink hair.

Anyhow---I stuck with the violet cape because it made him less Vincent Valentine. And better that way.

Gradually getting better at painting with Photoshop... but still. I'll have to get my hands on Corel Painter soon. Money money.

(Title's actually a song from the CT soundtrack, but I can't remember which one... Magus's theme had such a boring title I couldn't use it. It was called "Magus's Theme".)

I look at this, and I see Alan Rickman. I approve.

"Hrm. Your attempt at "fod" was adequet at best. Please, P, B and J?! I think I deserve a little better don't you? I have on some sort of orange-bronze type bikini briefs, as it would seem. Do you really want to get on my bad side, here?"

Love the pic. Awesome x2.

So when you talk about cliches you despise people who use the style manga, even for their own input of fantasy? You find style and design most important?

boum In reply to Blacklotuscomic [2006-06-04 04:03:33 +0000 UTC]

I was only talking about the "props" Magus is carrying around, which is nothing innovating... but manga IS clichéd nowadays. It's used everywhere and for everything. I'm not saying it's bad though, and I'm not despising anyone. I used to draw really generic manga so I don't really have any excuses.

I'm losing you in your second question. I find style and design more important than what?

I just wondered, the above comment was enough to answer, I'm just glad you don't despise fellow artists or amateurs, and you are right about manga being cliched alot, but what isn't cliched anymore these days? I watched you from the beginning and I saw your style grow, it's very lovely. I wondered if you as a person stayed the same too, some people who started with anime and developed their own style despise manga afterwards, I wondered if that was the same with you, and luckily it wasn't.

I actually enjoy manga when it's wonderfully executed and a bit unique... I'll be rooting for the occasional manga artist when he/she's trying to develop a very personal approach to it. There's some damn awesome manga artists out there, and I don't see why they shouldn't get any recognition.

I just believe that in most cases, manga is just a "phase" and people can get over it and have their own, personal, non-manga style. (I'm saying that because I actually went through it.) But doing a 180 degrees and hating it afterwards is just weird---it'd be like denying a few years of your life. Manga has actually helped me grow artistically, and I'm not ashamed of having done it.

Glad to hear that really. We even have 'forbidden to draw manga' tags on our college walls (dunno if I already said that >_> I understand that you can't draw it for everything and that real life classes are needed to be able to convert decent anatomics to comic style... But the teachers also don't want us to draw it in our free time, as during the lunchbreaks, or at home. Or posting it at dev. I don't really get that behaviour but Oh well... Thx for the reply's!

I had one last question: do you think my style is quite personal or not? You can be harsh! And if you don't have time to look or reply I'll understand! Greetings!

I'm not gonna be "harsh" 'cause I don't need to.

I think your manga style is very "generic"---which means I would probably not recognize your art among others (but I'm saying that as I don't know your art very much and I'm not the best reference, either). Having said that, however, I do recognize you have a lot of talent (for example in this [link] ). You can vary from typical anime to very realistic anthros, which is a cool asset. AND... you're still very young. Not a lot younger than me, but still enough to build a significant difference.

What makes your style less personal is the fact that all that builds your characters' faces is deja-vu. The eyes that aren't fully closed, the noses barely defined, and the mouth split in the middle. Changing only one aspect of these can make a huge difference. You don't have to obey to every manga rule there is.

If I were you, I'd want to be more unique. That doesn't necessarily mean to quit drawing manga either, you can keep doing it for all I care, but there's a way to step a little bit away from it. I think the clue to this is to incorporate things you like in your manga style. Try doing (for example) Disney-like eyes to a manga face. Poof! The difference it makes is amazing. The best example I can show you for this is *yamiza . If you don't know her (you probably do), go check her gallery. Start with the oldest stuff, and check out the latest ones. In a small, very discreet kinda way, she's doing the same thing she used to do. She only called it her own. She modified the eyes, the noses, the mouths of typical animes, got inspired by Disney (among other things) and now she kicks major ass.

I'm not saying you should change your art, either. You'll do it by yourself over time anyway. the trick is just to keep drawing. You have a lot of potential, I'm sure you'll do fine.
