TL;DR: Sandy finds a home with Lacy at Bontebok Estates! But they will come back to visit Malik and Fangorn often

“’Scuse me, sir, could you help me out? I’m a bit lost.”

Malik whirled around to see who was speaking to him. He hadn’t heard anyone come up behind him and was a little unnerved since he’d thought he was alone. Or at least thought he was the only human around; he was camped out with Sandy and Fangorn a short ways outside of Tokotna where he was preparing to enter them in the upcoming Faction Brawl and get Sandy her breeding certification.

The voice was coming from a bundle of winter clothes so tightly wrapped and layered that Malik couldn’t quite guess what might lie beneath. The voice was feminine, with an unfamiliar accent.

“Uhhhh, yeah sure. I could help. Are you looking for Tokotna?”

There wasn’t much else out here; Tokotna was the center of Tokota activities, but it was also a rather remote village. There wasn’t much else she could be looking for unless she was hopelessly lost.

“I sure am. I’m in the market for a Tokota and where better to find one than there? I figured you must be headed to the same place with your pair, there.” She gestured to Fangorn and Sandy, who were utterly unconcerned. Sandy yipped when she was pointed to.

“I am; we’re headed in for the Brawl in the morning. It’s a little late to be traveling for now, particularly in this weather. Why don’t you camp out with us for the night? Then you can follow us in the morning.”

The offer slipped out of his mouth before he had a second to think about it. He hadn’t even seen her face under all the scarves or asked her name. He had no idea who she was.

Fangorn was a good judge of character, though, and he showed no reservations about her. Sandy was already busy trying to beg an ear-scratch from the stranger.

“That’s just fantastic. I can watch the games and get a better sense of what these guys are really capable of. Thank you for your hospitality, sir! I’m Lacy.”

She retraced her steps to what turned out to be a fairly sturdy vehicle by the side of the road and retrieved a surprising amount of gear. “I like to be prepared,” she explained as she hauled a rather heavy bag back to his camp and started setting up.

When she was finished she pulled up a camp chair next to Malik and the cooking fire.

“What makes you want a Tokota?” he asked. “Most people don’t seem to know much about them if they don’t live around here.”

“Ah, well, I work at this stable down south. Bontebok Estates they’re called. Anyway I got a job there that requires me to have a hardy mount and a spare. I have a horse named Ceasar- he’s pretty as a peacock but well trained and totally capable. My boss isn’t convinced though. Says he might do for a spare but not as a primary mount. I think he’s biased because Ceasar is prettier than his fancy stallion is. Anyway, I figure if I’m going to have to find a mount I’d go for gold,  you know? They keep some riding cats there who are pretty strong and fierce but I’m not really a cat person. Wolf bears are really more my style.”

She’d removed her scarf layer by layer as she spoke, revealing a tan face and curly brown hair. Sandy jumped forward to lick her face as soon as it appeared, causing Lacy to throw her arms around the Tokota and laugh.

“See what I mean? Why would anyone want a big moody cat when they could have this?”

Malik couldn’t help but grin. True, Sandy loved just about everyone she ever met, but it was great to see someone who wasn’t upset at being crushed under an increasingly affectionate Toko.

--

The next morning, they packed their gear and decided to ride the Tokotas to the village. Lacy, who proved to be rather diminutive under her multitude of layers, had a great deal of fun riding Sandy who in turn seemed rather fond of her enthusiastic new friend. After arriving in Tokotna they spent rather more time than Malik had intended simply seeing the sights and checking out the sales yards. He found that he agreed with Lacy’s taste in Tokotas; they both found the exotic manes and dires lovely but weren’t willing to pay extra for colors or types that offered no additional utility to their rider.

The next day was spent preparing for and finally competing in the Faction Brawl where Lacy did indeed get to see Tokotas at their best. She also got to see Fangorn bring Malik a hard-won second place at the log pull, and Sandy dump Malik in the snow half-way though the ski-jouring course.

Malik had been planning to go home and return to his trainee duties at the tribe as soon as the Brawl was over, but he found himself lingering and helping Lacy comb through training seminars and auction listings. At the end of the week she knew she needed a Tokota in her life, but she hadn’t found it yet.

The answer occurred Malik only very gradually. He was a little reluctant to accept it, but everything he’d seen of Lacy’s capabilities said it was the right thing.

“Lacy… I don’t really need two Tokotas. We found Sandy alone in the woods and I’ve been looking after her and training her until we found where she came from or found her a home… and I think I might have found one.”

It took some convincing, but Lacy eventually admitted that Sandy was exactly the Tokota she was waiting for and said she would take her home on a few conditions. First, that before they left, Malik would spend a few weeks training Lacy and Sandy together and second, that Lacy would bring her back to Alaska and meet up with Malik and Fangorn as often as they could manage.

When it did come time for them to leave, Sandy wasn’t a bit worried. She viewed it as she viewed everything in her life; as a grand and wonderful adventure.

Hahaha, probably because he thinks of her as a bundle of winter clothes that lives a thousand miles away instead of as a female
