My drawing of Nessa! She's the best gym leader idcidcidc-

I actually drew Nessa bc of the whole whitewashing issue.
If you draw a dark skin character and it turns out a littler lighter than the original bc of overlays, etc, then I think it's okay. You didn't have any malicious intention of drawing the character lighter.
Now if you purposely draw them as a white/lighter character, THAT'S wrong. As a black person myself, I hardly ever see Black representation in Japanese/Eastern Media. I'm not gonna sit here and say there's never no black/darker skin tone anime character's bc there is. Just not a lot and not many are introduced properly as a character. They're either represented as the "Western stereotype of blacks" or a joke.
So having Nessa, besides Drock, as a darker skin/black Gym leader is amazing! She's a bad ass character too!
But seeing her being made white out of spite and jokes and even an APE, is disturbing and expresses internalized racism. This whole situation gives racists the opportunity to "troll" on Nessa and show their disliking towards black/PoC characters (besides East Asian characters, mainly Japanese and Korean).
I do not blame the maker of the comic that arose this situation. She had no ill intent and the comic is great in both versions.
But I hope this situation gives light to how toxic the anime/art community is towards darker skin characters in anime.

also inspo from FlyingPings bc of the Dynamax Pokeball! I loved the idea and thought It would be a nice touch to add to the piece!
