Some different concepts for Minecraft's Creeper, which is extraordinarily fun to interpret.I'm personally partial to the second one. Otherwise, I don't really know how a creature would evolve "exploding" as it's primary defense, offense, mating call, etc.

There are plants and mushrooms that "pop open" in order to release their seeds or spores and launch them at animals so they carry them in their fur a large distance in order to spread fast over a large area.

I think Notch said they would feel like dry leaves, and as for exploding plants, I think there's some kind of bog plant that "explodes" it's seed pods to spread its pollen.

As for the explosion thing, I had a story where creepers were spirits of the forest punished to eternal agony. And when they asked for help the were punished to death by the gods.
Also, Jeb said that in real life they would probably feel like dried leaves- hence my theory.)

I, me, luvs this because I get an idea from this. Much more a description: Left is natural (or outside), Center is in caverns and right is spawned/created by players.

I totally agree with you about the issue of exploding as a natural action. I also suspect outside influence, and your idea of a golem is great. Magical animation could also explain the bastards' horrific proficiency with stealth. x_x (I just had to turn on peaceful mode because I wanted to unearth and rebuild a desert temple in peace! Would never have occurred to me, but FIVE CREEPERS LATER.... D:< )
Anyway, each interpretation is good--each different, quite suitably creepy, but true to and evocative of the original.

I love all these concepts. I love the mouth and eyes on the first one, the second one: the stitching is cool, and third the blasted eyes and mouth (or rotted, etc).

I had a strange concept where the creeper was all fishy-looking, and had these giant claws.

A question about the right one is why all creeperBots erode in the same way? What causes that?
Then again I like making up theories about who made the strongholds, what the Nether really is (Hell for pigs?) and so on.

1st one: Slime+Failed Pig Model=Slime Creeper
2nd one: FrankenCreeper
3rd one: The Green Menace; Robo "Blow your stuff up"

I always imagined that creepers reproduce through spores that are released when they explode. Ideally the target they explode on dies, and makes a wonderful incubation/food source for the little creeperlets.

The second isn't a creature is why, I take it? They have shirts explaining their anatomy, they are indeed creatures, but I think it and the first are quite good.

Creepers ain't made out of leaves. If you're reffering what notch said "I've always imagine them crunchy, like dry leaves" That doesn't mean they ARE leaves. Just that they're as crunchy as dry leaves.
