i've got to admit i'm not that brave at taking photos while riding the bus, though i see so many interesting portraits...i just don't like people staring at me while i'm staring with my camera

If you look confident (not like you're trying to "sneak" photos) then you'll generally be ignored.

The big issue is always confidence.

This is awesome. What equipment do you use?

I have a 1ds Mark II with a 300mm zoom lens so street photography is nearly impossible for me.

Thank you!

This was with a Bessa R2A and CV 34/1.4 lens.

Oh, and I love to shoot from the proverbial hip. Let pure happenstance take hold.

Maybe he was ignoring me (thinking "stupid foreigner"). I took 3-4 photos of him.

Nice. You're a much braver man then I. I was in Chicago and people watching with my photography teacher and another student from Dubai when a homeless man, the one you can see as my featured deviation, or whatever its called, and I snapped quite a few of him with the camera on my lap. I was a little worried that he would hear the shutter and go from the conversation about vietnam and killing some foreign taxi driver to flipping out on me. But then again, the larger the city the more apathetic the people seem to be.

Not just that, but the shutter sound is "overrated". What I mean is, it may sound like a hammer to you, but then again the camera is right next to you and you are focused on the sound. A subject a few feet away on a busy, noisy city street is more likely to see you holding the camera then to hear the shutter slap

True. It does sound like the throbbing heart under the floor to me. The pictures made it totally worth it, though. The couple that turned out are definitely some of my favorites I've taken.
