Well, the more I do stuff with Chespin, the more he's becoming one of my favorite pokemon. :3Anyway, it's been brought to my attention plenty of times that the last chespin sprite I made had a humongous head, so I resprited it (finally).
I figured it would be fun to make another animation as well, so I did that as well.
I decided to do a very detailed animation with this one. I animated literally every part of him. Believe it or not, but the four spikes on his hood are animated independently, his toes move somewhat, and I even gave him a cartooney stretchiness when he jumps. :b
It took a lot longer than my other animations, but I think it looks a lot better, and it looks really official looking and kind of amazing in my eyes.
I really want some hard criticism on this, as I want to know if I'm just delusional when I think my sprites are great, or if this one actually turned out really good. :b

Well, I sort of consider this somewhat fair and somewhat not fair as you did bring up a good point with the size of the shine, but I think saying that it's not too original or impactful because it's fanart of an official pokemon is a tad silly. :b
As for the pixels getting all messed up, that's really the style of the animations in the pokemon games. :/
The part that I would agree with the pixels getting messed up would be on the top brown triangle area. The tan color kind of protrudes into the triangle and the shell.
The "just bouncing up and down" is also the style of the pokemon black and white animations, so as someone trying to emulate that, I don't see why I'd get marked down for that. :b

Most of it was because the computer wouldn't let me give 4 stars, but chespin is just starting to get a bit too common on the internet and the animations in black and white do a bit more and silly boy, chespin isn't in black and white. I also pay very clear attention to the pixels in black n white which I HAVE and played moments before getting on the computer. Idk it was also my first critique so... Sorry. But we all have different opinions don't we?

Yes. True. But I play b and w and emerald and soul silver and b and w 2 and almia A LOT. But yes there will be the occasional choppiness.

One of the best BW-style animations I've seen, honest. Though the jumping animation is a little overused in my opinion, all of the starters had some kind of jump in their animation except Charmander, Cyndaquil and BW Snivy (Snivy jumps in BW2). Many non-starters did it too. On the graphic designers' part, it honestly struck me as something like "we can't think of any animation, let's just make it jump". As we don't really know much about Chespin's abilities, that's fine, just something to keep in mind if you're planning to make tons more of these. Still, the animation is smooth and feels very official.

lol, now that you mention it, the jump is really overused. :3
I guess if I were to change it, I could do something like Chespin clinches real tight and then his spikes get more spikey like when he attacks in XY.

It's really good, but the green is too saturated, and the shiny bit is too shiny, which gives it a plastic-y quality... If you make it duller, it will look really good.

This is actually something I've thought about myself.Β
I decided to keep it though because I imagined his hood to be like a chestnut shell and actually be plasticy like that.Β
I do see what you mean, but until we know for sure whether his hood is soft or hard, I'm just going to keep it.
That definitely would be a problem though if the hood does end up not being a "shell"

Picture quality and compitance with a pen traditional or digital comes with a lot of practice continuous practice and constructive critisism/feedback that outlines what you're doing right and what you need to work on. You're still quite new so you'll be alright just surround yourself with capable artists that can help you grow :3

The only reason I have views is because I submit my sprites into a bunch of groups in hopes that someone with a buttload of points will find me and commission me so I can keep on renewing my premium membership. ^.^

Also, for the animation, the way you say icon makes it sound like the winner wants it for a dA icon. I'll let you know that the limitations are really bad for icons on here. I could only do like 4 frames on an icon.Β

I'm gonna take a swing at it though and assume you meant like what programs I use.Β
I use ASEprite for all of my animating needs, and then I just use paintbrush for making the sprites.
Both programs are free and great too.
