She had a headache. A bad one. One of those when you feel like someone hits you with a hammer. Of course it had to be on the same day as their next competition. Sheila rubbed her temples for the umpteenth time, hopelessly trying to get rid of the pain. She didn't even notice when someone approached her. The red-haired woman only looked up when a pill was waved around in front of her eyes.
"That's 50 euros please. No questions, no talking."
Sheila had to smile as she lightly slapped the hand away. "No sorry mister dealer. I don't have any money on me and I won't take any pills without knowing what's inside."
"That's unfortunate. It may be of interest to you that I took this from your very own forest green jacket."
"Well then I might tell you that those aren't painkillers. That's mint candy." Sheila giggled.
Owen rolled his eyes and made a dramatic gesture before handing her a still wrapped pill. "I know silly. I was joking. Caprice told me what you usually use so I got you one."
"Thank you. I feel like someone constantly hits me on the head."
Some time after taking the medication Sheila felt much better. She wrapped herself in two jackets when she left the others to grab Roxana and get the mare warmed up. Dark clouds covered the sun, but neither rain nor snow would fall. Roxy shot Sheila an unpleased look when Sheila removed the blanket from the mare's back. Reluctantly the Zlesdin followed Sheila out of the building and into the cold. Sheila's italian genes weren't fond of the cold weather either, but without a chance to change it they had to live with the temperatures.
When it was finally their turn to show, Sheila took off her jackets to reveal a costume which was actually very uncomfortable to wear. Especially the metal parts were tightly fitting and quite honestly maybe a little tight for Sheila.
"You look great." Owen remarked when he took the jackets from Sheila.
"This might be the last time you see me alive."
"What? What kind of statement is that?"
"If I should fall off, these metal pieces will probably pierce through some vital parts of my body."
"Pfff, you surely won't fall. And I'll free you of your metal prison as soon as you finish the course. Take care of her Roxy." Owen wished Sheila good luck and stratched Roxana behind the ears. The mare wasn't sure what to think of the male human's affection, but she was kind enough not to bite him.
Roxana's ears perked up when the pair entered the arena. She was a litte annoyed by Sheila's constant shuffling on her back. Stupid human for not checking the costume prior to wearing it to a show. Just to remind the woman who was important, she jumped forward without any notice. Sheila had to correct her posture and tried not to pay any further attention to the clothing.
The jumps all looked gorgeous, yet Roxy eyed "The Firecamp" with a little suspicion as they passed the jump for the first time. Sheila was a little worried about the mare's reaction, but themed shows usually had special looking jumps and this show wasn't an exception.
And off they go. The first few jumps were no problem for Roxana. The mare made sure to stick to her usual jump style, tugging her legs exceptionally close to her body. Every time they went moderately close to "The Firecamp" the mare would eye the jump though. Sheila kept her breath when they approached "The Runic Wall" as Roxy did sometimes stop dead in front of wall jumps. The pretty carved wall was not a problem that day though. The Zlesdin leapt over it without question. The water jump wasn't a problem that day either. She jumped right over it, not even trying to shorten her stride.
The wolves who chase the sun and the moon, Hati and Skoll came into sight. Roxana's hooves came a little close to the pole, but they still cleared the jump. After the next turn it was time for "The Firecamp". Sheila noticed the mare uncomfortably moving around under saddle. She got slower and her rider was afraid she would just stop. With firm pressure to her belly, Sheila shoved Roxana forward to the jump. The mare made a "bunny jump" over the obstacle trying to use all four legs at once to get behind the monster. Her next few strides were an off-beat canter, but she quickly recovered. After two more jumps they left the arena with a smile on their faces. Well, Sheila smiled. Roxy was contendly stretching her neck, obviously happy she had survived that monster of a jump and pleased by her performance.
Sheila was even more happy when she could peel the costume off of her body and change into something more comfortable.
