Description Happy New Year - this guy turned up in the birch tree over the fence while we were having lunch this afternoon. There were a small flock of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos up on the hill on Christmas day, but this is the first one I've since this close to the house for a long time. As he was alone, and in the tallest tree within sight, which would command a wide view, I assume he was on lookout for the rest, who I'm guessing were on the Neighbour's  large front lawn.

That's a nice shot, and a nice bird too! You must see them frequently where you live, do you?

In the general area - within a few kilometers, yes, but only in the last week have some taken to coming down to just around the house. Thanks, BTW

I love Cockatoos!  Its a shame they are a pest in New Zealand as they are such lovely birds.

Are they a recently introduced species in NZ? I remember back in the mid 90's bumblebees arrived in Tasmania, apparently from NZ. Now they're everywhere, and are considered an environmental threat - I think because they outcompete with native bees which are specialised to certain native plants, but don't quote me -
but the first time I saw one, it was like, "You've got to be kidding me. These things are nuts?  How do they fly?"

Sulphur-crested cockatoos were introduced to NZ in the 19th century around the early 1900s.
Apparently European bumblebees or Buff-tailed bumblebees were accidentally introduced to Tasmania, they aren't found on the mainland which is good because they could do serous harm to native and endemic flora and fauna.
