The NWDG/NorthWest Diesels Limited (initially started as the Heritage Diesels Foundation) was founded to preserve a handful of heritage diesels.
It is one of the private companies that run the Northwestern region of England, usually in Sodor and Cumbria. Some engines provide substitute services, haul freight etc. Its locomotive shed is located in Crovan’s Gate, Sodor, and its diesel engines are loosely part of the NWR. It is often seen rescuing failed engines, or pulling charter trains across the network.

The first of the fleet was Gerald, the Class 56, which was originally in co-ownership with the Class 56 Group.
