might i suggest some cross hatchign
smudging's fun and cool and all but w/ this sort of creepy feel you have going on i feel like cross hatching will add a lot to the mood :]

hahaa the funny thing is i thought the same thing halfway through, im not a big fan of smudging ether (always seemed like the easy way out when it comes to shading.)

haha yea i think smudging is great but you have to either use it sparingly or really understand volumes to use it..
i feel like cross hatching or etching or cross contours work best w/ illustrations though
especially creepy effects
