Description My younger brother was diagnosed with asperger’s syndrome a few years ago. I took this photo as a way to try to spread awareness of the autism spectrum. I’m still learning about it, and I’m by no means an expert, but I am trying to understand. I used the pattern of the autism awareness ribbon as inspiration. Imagine trying to put together a puzzle, but you’re missing most of the pieces, and the pieces you do have don’t seem to fit together in any coherent way. That’s just a fraction of what I imagine it might be like to have autism. We tend to take eye contact, subtle facial expressions, and bodily queues for-granted. Try to think about how it is for those who don’t see these social queues. But I believe there is hope. If we combine efforts, I believe we can put the pieces of this puzzle together. Sometimes it can be hard, but we all try to understand each other.

The concept is cool, but a lot of people (myself included) find the idea of a puzzle offensive.

i don't mind the puzzle piece symbol either, because it goes way back before speaks. but i also like the rainbow infinity sign used by autistics and the Âû used by autistics too

Eve before Autism Speaks, it was used negatively.

well, it was supposed to represent a difference, and NOT the "cure" meaning Speaks (or $peaks) loves to use so much.

I don't know about other people, but I always interpreted it as a metaphor for something that was "broken".

Thank you.

I'm sorry if you find it offensive. I wasn't trying to be at all. I was simply using the idea from the Autism Awareness Ribbon.

No, I didn't find it offensive. It dosen't really bother me when people use puzzles to represent autism (when I start selling MLP customs, I plan to tie a puzzle print ribbon in their tails and my slogan will be something like, "Support an autistic, buy a pony". A puzzle actualy makes sence compared to some awareness or pride ribbons. Extactaly what about rainbows reprents homosexuality? I think they used that because it stood out and wasn't really used for anything. I just thought you should be aware some autistic people are really against the puzzle peice. It only bothers me when people put it with a cure campain or trying to promote autism speaks. The puzzle peice by itself dosen't usualy bother me. I saw a sticker on someone's car that was all pastel colors. As I said, it dosen't really bother me for the most part. This is a really cool pic. I just thought you should be aware a lot of autistic people find the puzzle peice very offensive.

OK, I'm glad you weren't offended by it.

Oh the MLP customs sound adorable. ^_^

I can see how the puzzle piece would be offensive, like saying that they are a "puzzle" we need to figure out. I meant it more the other way around. Like it might seem like the world is a puzzle that's kind of hard to figure out at times.

I agree about the rainbow. haha. There was a comedian that said it was "greedy" of the homosexuals to take refracted light. lol.

Yeah, it makes sence both ways.

I have Asperger's, the Rubik's Cube is a much better symbol.

Ooh that's a good thought! You're right that I'm sure it's much more complex than a puzzle, and a Rubik's Cube would be a great symbol! I based this (the puzzle piece) on the Autism awareness ribbon which has a puzzle piece symbol.

I love how the focus is just on the puzzle piece, and the background is all fuzzy
