It's sort of a pen with a metal tip. It's powered and hooked up to a box (mine at least, there's cheaper ones that don't). The power heats up the metal tip of the pen (you can use various tips and control the temperature), then you use the heat to burn the wood lightly. Basically drawing with heat. You should give it a try!
