Description This is a quick colored-pencil portrait of Sitamun, an Egyptian princess who was a daughter of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. She would have married her father in the thirtieth year of his reign, presumably for the same reason other Pharaohs would have married their sisters (it kept their godlike ancestry within the royal family, apparently). It may sound like a creepy arrangement today, but it's hard to say whether a woman of Sitamun's cultural upbringing would have felt strongly about it either way. Anyway, all mention of her seems to disappear when Amenhotep III's son, Akhenaten, took the throne, for reasons that remain mysterious.

The portrait you see here is based on sculpted images attached to a chair belonging to her, which portray her wearing a cylindrical cap with cobra designs on top of her hair.
