Notes:A planet similar in some ways to Earth during the Archean Eon, Barbalo is a young world when compared to other planets. Having first formed around two billion years ago, much of the world is covered by a shallow ocean, no deeper than the average human’s waist at its deepest, with several landmasses scattered about. These shallow waters served as the perfect primordial soup for the development of the syzgyans. More resembling a single-celled organism than any kind of animal, the syzgyans are actually quite complex, and highly intelligent, creatures. A naturally hermaphroditic species, they possess the ability to combining two or more individuals into one being. If enough are joined together, usually at least ten, they’ll enter their reproductive stage. This process usually lasts for a few days, after which the new syzgyan will split apart into many new individuals, sometimes around five times the amount that first joined together. This strange reproductive process forms the cornerstone of their many cultures, which all share the belief in an original syzgyan from which they all derived from. Some even believe that the time will come when they once more join together into this being, with it taking on an almost divine status, while the less spiritual simply view it as their most recent common ancestor. Whatever the case, their connected to this original being still binds them together, to the point that they’re able to sense other members of their species, even across larger distances. They also possess electromagnetic abilities, which, through centuries of studying their own biology, allowed them to become quite technologically proficient on their otherwise primitive world. While not a space-faring race, they produced a highly-efficient energy grid, which allowed them to construct cities that spanned across much of the planet. This ability is also how they communicate with each other, forming a vastly complex language based on the electrical signals they emit. To this day, none have been able to quite decipher all of its countless nuances. Not even their captors, the kett. Yes, sadly, their fascinating culture was reduced to mud and rubble upon the arrival of the kett. As with most worlds they conquered, it didn’t take long for Barbalo to be utterly ravaged and its inhabitants shipped off-world. The kett were fascinated by the syzgyans reproductive ability and were most eager to put them through the Exaltation. Unfortunately for them, the syzgyans’ biology was far too dissimilar for them to be viable candidates. Because of this, the syzgyans were mostly put to work at kett bases throughout the galaxy, managing computers and other technology.
Character Notes: One such syzgyan was Henos. Being the result of a fusion of three great syzgyan minds, it was able to adapt to kett technology rather quickly. Unlike many other syzgyans, who were most displeased with being held captive, Henos viewed it as the opportunity of a lifetime. Getting a chance to study technology far beyond their own, on a world light years away from Barbalo at that, was something a technician like itself could’ve only dreamed of prior to the kett invasion. Under Henos’ supervision, the kett base ran like clockwork. However, even its expertise in computers couldn’t stop an invasion from the Andromeda Initiative. Henos fought hard, wanting more than anything to save this precious technology. However, when the tide of battle turned in favor of the strange new aliens, it didn’t take long for the syzgyans to surrender, having little in terms of combat proficiency. Henos begged the invaders to spare the computers, and it was shocked to find that it didn’t destroy them, unlike the kett. They even offered to show Henos the inside of their ship, an offer that the syzgyan immediately took up. Nowadays, the syzgyans at the base have become an integral part of the Andromeda Initiative. Even after all this time, As for Henos, it enjoyed exploring all the new technology of the strange aliens until the day that it joined together with more syzgyans and split apart into a new generation, with some of the new offspring carrying on its passion.
