I smile to myself,
When I think of the way,
You slipped from my room,
Just before break of day.
How we lay whispering,
Maintained the charade.
Lovers by night.
Good friends by day.
I wanted so badly,
To look in your eye.
But I knew if I did,
They’d see through our lies.
Where we as clever,
As we thought we were being?
You sneaking upstairs,
With nobody seeing.
Could they really miss,
Those lingering looks?
As we sat playing cards,
Or reading those books.
I loved the drama,
But I missed holding you.
Next time will be different,
Only we two.
