Description
This is a watercolor painting of 79th street, on the Southside of Chicago, where Tyshawn Lee and so many others were murdered. I wrote in black ink the names of every homicide victim in chicago of 2015 up to November 15th here, which becomes nothing more than a texture. As more die, and sadly so many more will, I will be adding their names until the end of the year. I have no idea where at this point.
The local community is trying to reclaim their streets, protesting, enacting gun laws, but are facing violence not only from street gangs, but also from many of the police themselves who should be protecting them, but have fallen to a war mentality.
The community is under siege, the police are under siege, the children are dying from Tyshawn playing basketball to newborns who never received a name.
Guns are easy to obtain, plentiful, especially from neighboring states, it does not matter if they are held by a good guy or a bad guy, the holes they make are the same.
St Sabina Church is an epicenter of activism and hope, with Father Pfleger doing anything he can to stem the retaliation. Spike Lee has also just released the Movie Chiraq which compares the number of deaths in Chicago to how many have died in the actual war zone of Iraq.
