Description

This is the main tower of the crusader castle of Amauda in Cilicia (modern Turkey).  It was built by the military order of the Teutonic knights at the incentive of the Armenian king of Cilicia, Leon II, who donated land to the Teutons in 1212.  Although he was not a Catholic himself, Leon  maintained close relations with the Papacy and was hoping that the presence of Western, in this case, German, knights can help protect the eastern frontier of his realm against attacks by neighbouring Muslim powers – particularly the Mamluks from their power-base in Egypt.

The building of Amauda, however, had a more complex background than simply rivalry between Christians and Muslims. The Armenians also had another rival in the East – the Latin principality of Antioch. Though weakened by repeated Islamic attacks, the Norman rulers of Antioch still commanded considerable wealth and had ambitions of incorporating Cilicia into their realm. Furthermore, they also obtained the support of one o the two most powerful military orders of the Latin world – the Templar knights, who built the powerful fortress of Gaston (Baghras) close to the border of Cilicia. The Armenian rulers, therefore sought to counter this threat by forging alliances with other, Latin competitors of the Templars. The Teutonic knights seemed ideal because in 1212 they were a new military order that would never be able to threaten the power of the Armenian monarchy. At the same time however, their property guarded the eastern gateway to Cilicia and if the Templars were to cross it, they would somehow have to justify why they pillaged the lands belonging to fellow Latin military order (such situations happened but still, it was bad press...)

For the Teutonic knights, the support of the Armenian monarchs was crucial for building their influence in the, rapidly shrinking, Christian states of the Levant.  Amauda became the centre of the second largest Teutonic estate in the East (the largest was in the kingdom of Jerusalem, around the Teutonic castle of Montfort which I currently excavate). For years, it was a prosperous frontier march that served its purpose well.  Thus, when Muslim forces approached Amauda in 1266 it is said that no less 2200 refugees from the surrounding lands sought shelter in the castle. Sadly, the walls were eventually breached, the castle fell and all those hiding inside were either killed or sent as slaves to Egypt. Five years later the same fate befell the castle of Montfort, thus bringing an end to Teutonic estates in the Levant.  The Latin East survived for few decades more but the Teutonic Order was already shifting its attention towards the north – the golden age of crusader Baltic was about to begin...

Good point! As an archaeologist, I excavated a number of cellars in which the vault collapsed and killed all who sought refuge there - indeed, quite often the protection of walls and underground chambers is elusive.... Thank you, yet again, for taking the time to view this and write such an interesting comment! I really appreciate it!

So cool...If only they would make a historical drama about the time period. Some episodes of the Middle Ages in general would make Game of Thrones look downright tame in comparison, I believe.

Good point! I remember reading about a Byzantine empress that had her adult son killed in the same chamber in which she gave birth to him because she did not want him to challenge her political power - that would be an amazing story to portray in the final episode of a Byzantine-themed story Thank you very much for the comment - really appreciate it!

Yup, and then there's the Reconquista...
The Umayyads were not the most stable family either. Neither were the Christian Kingdoms in the north, although I think they were less murderous to each other.
Actually, I wish a tv station made a historical drama about the Crusades or the Reconquista, or even the Byzantine Empire. HBO would likely be the one to do it, like what they did with "Chernobyl".

I am very glad you like it! Thank you very much for the comment and sorry for taking the time to view this! As for tensions between Armenians and Latins - yes, the Christian forces in the Levant were hopelessly divided. Even within single city, like Acre, Venetians fought against the Genoese, Templars confronted Hospitallers, Cypriot factios rivalled with 'German' faction etc. Even in smaller state like County of Tripoli, there were internal wars between the rulers of Tripoli and their vassals from Gibelet. With so many divisions and internal conflicts - it seems to me that the Christian states in the Levant had little chance of survival.... Anyway, thank you very much once again and all the best from Israel!

Don't worry about the time, I'm not always quick, we'll have a life outside DeviantArt

I see, I didn't knew the Christian Levant was divided like that with so many internal conflicts. So I guess that every alternate history I could imagine about a persistant Kingdom of Jérusalem ou County of Tripoli wouldn't be credible

I've heard that Maronite suceed to create a "nearly" state in medieval era. Did you know something about it ? I'm always curious to hear more about Oriental Christian

Thanks, all the best from France

Great writeup and picture. With the Teutonic knights there is always the focus on the Baltic and you rarely find some details in their earlier ventures.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BricksandStones In reply to Magnus-Strindboem [2019-09-02 06:23:51 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, I agree with you completely - this is especially true in Poland where the Teutonic knighs are (naturally in a way) associated almost solely with Prussia and there is little appreciation of their 'Levantine' endevours... In fairness though, the Teutonic Order could never match the Templars or the Hospitallers in the Eastern Mediteranean.... Still, I am very glad this shot and history caught your attention - thank you very much for viewing this and for taking the time to read and comment! Your consistent interest in this type of posts is a great motivation to remain active here - thank you again and all the best from Israel!
