Description

This is the red-brick, gothic cathedral in Frombork (modern Poland). Located on a hill overlooking a lagoon of the Baltic sea, it is one of the largest and best preserved crusader-era churches in the Baltic region. It was constructed in the 14th C. on land conquered from pagans by the Teutonic knights and their Latin allies. However, unlike other parts of Prussia, Frombork was not controlled by the Teutonic Order. Instead, it formed part of a newly created, crusader duchy ruled by prince-bishops of Warmia. Though allied with the Teutonic Order, the bishops pursued their own policies: they fortified their cathedral so that it could withstand a siege by pagan Lithuanians; they constructed castles to defend their dominion and showed a greater degree of acceptance towards local population by opening schools and allowing Prussians to enter their church’s administration. After the Teutonic Order was defeated in 1466, the prince-bishops swore fealty to kings of Poland and stood loyally with the Polish armies during later wars against the Teutonic knights. Under Polish suzerainty, the duchy become a center of learning. One of the bishops of Warmia, Jan Dantyszek spent many years travelling across Europe and knew the famous Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés as well as Martin Luther and Erasmus of Rotterdam. The most famous cleric from Warmia, however, was Nicolaus Copernicus who was the first astronomer to mathematically prove that the sun did not circulate around the Earth but rather, that it was the earth that circulated around the sun. Copernicus spent years studying in Cracow and Bologna in Italy but at the end of his life, he returned to Frombork where he is buried to this day.

Frombork is located in a distant part of Poland and journey here might take some time but if you will ever get to visit Poland I really encourage you to visit it. It sounds tacky when I write this, but Frombork is surrounded by beautiful nature, it is a small, lovely town with an amazing cathedral with beautiful gothic portals, sculpture and gargoyles made of stone imported from Sweden. The town also includes a gothic parish church (visible on the left of the photo), fully preserved circuit of defensive walls and a medieval hospital covered with gothic frescoes. It is a true pearl of the Baltic and, when you are tired of sightseeing, you can walk along one of the beaches across the lagoon and collect amber!

Thank you for commenting Anthony - I am very glad that this caught your attention - medieval Baltic is one of my favourite regions and I am always glad when people seem to appreciate its medieval monuments as well - thank you again (and again, sorry for taking so long to reply!)

Frombork is amazing - together with Kwidzyn - I think they are two of the most interesting crusader cathedrals, not just in the Baltic, but also in general - thank you very much for commenting, as always, I appreciate it!

Hi! Thank you for the comment and I am sorry for taking so long to respond! I am really glad you like it, I honestly think that Frombork is a fascinating site, one of the more interesting medieval cathedrals in the East - well preserved and perched by the sea... yet still, it is not very well known so I am happy when people like it - thank you very much again, cheers!

Yes, I think that the Baltic region in general is one of the less popular parts of Europe which, to me at least, seems a shame because it has a very rich medieval heritage with well preserved monuments that are worth seeing.... Thank you very much for taking the time to view this and comment, I appreciate it! It is a pleasure to see that someone shows interest in the Baltic

Copernicus! Thank you once again for the image and the background. I've read so much about him. He is one of my personal heroes. He had a sensitive soul and he had had a unique intellect.

Thank you very much for the comment Bryan! I really appreciate it, especially since comments from you are somwhat more substantial than usuall DA exchanges. This is what makes uploading material here worthwhile. I am very glad you like Copernicus, he is a fascinating figure and there are some wonderful medieval sites associated with him in Poland (apart from Frombork, also Olsztyn, Toruń and Lidzbark Warmiński). Still, as you probably now he also studied in Italy and was quite worried that his works will not be approved by the Pope. Couple of years ago, there were some archaeological works in Frombork and they managed to identify Coperniuc's grave (he did not have a proper, medieval tombstone but rather was buried beaneth one of the side altars (as a cannon of the cathedral he was responsible for maintaining this altar. What is important is that now they built a new tomb monument for him and, even though I was worried it will be ugly, it is not that bad actually... Anyway, as always, thank you for the comment! Especially thank you since I did not have time to visit your gallery yet - I promise I will, it is just that I have a new job which requires me to sit in an office for 8 hours a day and I still need to get used to this type of life......

As ever with your submissions, this is a pearl of wisdom and learning. And an impressive photograph as well, which highlights the massive grandeur of the cathedral and brings out the red tints of brick and roof tile against the blue-grey background of the Baltic sea. These spires are particularly eye-catching, too.

I like how the sea looks so...cold. The red-brick and the cold-appearing sea really emphasizes it is the Baltic we are talking about here! The church itself is lovely. A shame about the baroque chapel...it doesn't really work there...Ah well.
Also, Dantyszek sounds pretty awesome! XD

Hi Akitku! I am so glad that you decided to comment on this one! Honestly, I am always very happy when I see that you took the time to view my gallery and even write a comment.... I agree with you that the baroque (is this baroque? to me this period is called post-medieval ) chapel does not look very good. There are a number of such chapels added by Polish kings to medieval churches - there is one attached to the church of St Mary in Gdańsk and one known as Zygmuint's chapel which is attached to the cathedral in Kraków. Supposedly this last chapel is one of the most beautiful examples of early Renaissance art.....hmpf! I am also happy you like Dantyszek, he seems to have been a very interesting character - he even made a pilgrimage to the monastery of St. Catherine on mt. Sinai even though at the time - he was supposed to study in Italy Thank you again for comment - it is a pleasure to see that  you still show interest in my photography!

You chose the perfect angle for this - the light and sky work well too. Your descriptions add so much to your photos. The spire in the middle of the roof is an architectural wonder - looks like a look-out post! (I can´t explain why but it seems strange for a cathedral to be so near the sea - maybe just because it´s unusual). Truly impressive.

Thank you for the comment Andrew! It is good to hear from you, especially since I was absent for the last month or so.... To be honest, this is a very common view of the cathedral because this shot can be taken from one of the medieval towers defending it. Still, I think it shows the cathedral better than any photo from the ground. You are quite right about the cathedrals being located further away from the sea. Especially in the Baltic where most port cities are located not directly on the sea cost but rather along the rivers close to the sea... The reason why this was possible in Frombork is because the water here is a lagoon, separated from the open sea by a narrow peninsula (visible on the photo - this is the dark stretch of land just above the water level to the left). The water in the lagoon is usually very calm and sometimes have more in common with a lake than with the Baltic. Still sea going vessels use it and, in the medieval period, there were even some sea battles fought over it so I guess it can count as the sea Thank you again for the comment, I am glad that you visited my gallery again!
